My wife and I are set to leave for Sacramento for Thanksgiving. We both have asthma. Anybody out there who lives out there who can tell me if that's a good idea? Thanks in advance.

I live on the edge of Sacramento and work in Sacramento. Unless the wind kicks up I would stay away if I had asthma. It looks like a foggy day but it’s smoke not fog. The air quality index is 215 today which puts it up there with the worst days in China. I am training for an ultra marathon and I am stuck indoors on a treadmill for now and a 2 hour car ride if I want to do a long run this weekend.

I am in Carmichael, about 7 miles from downtown Sacramento,
and the air is really bad. I can notice difficulty in breathing, also
many people I see in their cars are wearing those cloth face masks.
If you and your wife have asthma, stay away, or bring oxygen and
double the number of inhalers you normally use! It is really BAD.

Actually, they are saying the particles in the air are too small for the plain cloth masks to do much good. The more high tech (and more expensive) respirator masks will work, but even those must be fitted well.

The unpredictable part is that every place you go has its own unique combination of particles and allergens in the air. Keep closely tuned into how you are feeling, and don't simply try to tough it out if symptoms worsen. Any area that sits in a valley can allow stagnant air to form, but those areas also have their good periods too.

The people most at risk are those with upper respiratory conditions and children under the age of 10. The air quality in Sacramento is especially poor due to the Camp Fire in Butte County.
I live in Sacramento and have been staying in. Even then I am coughing, sneezing & wheezing. They say it is like smoking 13 cigarettes.
Stay home and be thankful you did... Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and maybe next year.
