I interpret the above comment to mean that you will be photographing people moving about without a tripod. Please note that the less expensive telephoto/zoom lenses are typically "slow". Meaning that they have a smallish maximum aperture, which in turn requires a slower shutter speed in order to compensate for less light squeezing through the smallish aperture. And a slow shutter speed may prohibit shooting the camera hand-held, which may be the preferred method for photographing shoppers.

So, you may want to keep a BIG eye on the maximum aperture of the lenses you are evaluating.

I apologize if you already understand the limitations of longer lenses.

Best,

Jason

Jason,
Tis is a reason why I often switch to Shutter Priority with lower light. With a newer body wising the newer Canon DIGIC releases, perhaps auto ISO is an approach since it lets you automatically limit the ISO. "Tis the imperfect Photo world that makes fast lenses heavy AND expensive, and slower lenses with variable apertures for the rest of us.

I bought a used Canon EF 70-300 mm lens that I enjoyed very much with my T3i. If you don't need that much reach, there is the Canon EF-S 18-135 mm that is smaller in size (less obtrusive) and hugely versatile.

I second the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM as a good telephoto choice. Lets you reach out and touch something.
With the crop sensor it is like having a 480mm lens.
The lens has the superior nano-USM etc.
See this review.

Thank you very much for the advice. That makes a lot of sense. I had no idea that there were those who specialize in "Street Photography" and I will look up your reference and learn from others. The other day I did some shooting in the Harpers Ferry, WV area since I live only 7 miles from there. I am beginning to take more pictures with people in the pictures. I always asked them if it were OK to take a picture of them or if I didn't, tell them afterwards that I got them in my picture and asked them if it were OK and if not, I offered to delete the photo. I can think of other uses for the telephoto in the area so I am still going to buy myself one for a Christmas present to myself.

I would urge you to get this rare Japanese lens now discontinued --"Canon EF 28-105mm F/3.5-4.5 II AF USM Lens Made In Japan"...Look it up on the net. Any other discription no matter how small, would not be this model lens. You can thank me later. It is "built like a tank" and can deliver in low light --I have several! The new model doesn't even come close. Remember --EXACTLY like my discription, any deviation --not the same!

I believe these lenses were used on the early Canon EF SLR film cameras they-are great lens. I would like to get one to I’ll look into that soon thanks.

If you use the Exact description you will not find what you are being told to look for. To the best of my knowledge, Canon made 4 versions of the EF 28-105 lens. The EF 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II USM was released 18 years ago and sold for just under $400 USD.
Remember, not ballsafire's exact description, you won't find it. Why you all ask? Look closely, you will see why. I'll give you a hint, all USM lenses are auto focus.

Don’t let anyone bs you the 55-250 is a real sweet lens I have shot some beautiful shots of birds. It does like good light

Let me be a little clearer on critique of the EF-S 55-250 lens. There are three versions of this lens. Optically, all 3 lenses are about the same. The third version has stepper motor (STM) and is ideal for video. All three versions use UD (ultra low dispersion) elements and for their cost, have exceptionally good image quality. All three lenses have really good image stabilization rated for 4 shutter speed stops. The lens is very plasticy and if I recall, have plastic mounts, which isn't really a big deal if you don't change lenses a whole lot. None of the lenses have any kind of dust or weather sealing. New, all three lenses cost around $400, the STM is, I believe, around $440.

For the cost, this lens will deliver. I'm not being a lens snobs here but over the years I've acquired a few decent lenses; definitely more costly than the 55-250's, that will easily outperform them but, for the money, they are very good lenses.

I have a 55-250mm lens that I bought to get me a bit more reach past my 50mm without breaking my bank. I have been very pleased with its reach and sharpness at moderate distances. My camera is a Canon t2i. The IS really works to keep the shake out for my walk-around handheld shots.

I have that lens and am very happy with it when I need the reach. My most used lens is my EF-S 18-135, which sounds like it would fit your needs. I use them on my 80D. One of our daughters has a T3i and the 18-135 and is very happy with it. Decide which one fits your needs and you will be very happy with either: or both!
