Old find in the bottom of an old camera bag

So I was digging around in the old camera equipment bags. I was sorting thru some old film bodies (Nikon FM, FE2) and my first digital, the D50. I came across this lens : Sigma 28-70 1:2.8-4 DG D. It has a 58mm filter on it that is "dinged" but the lens looks clean, has no rattles, and zooms smoothly. I have no idea where I got it, or what camera I used it on.

I am currently shooting on a D3400, and I know the lens will not work on this camera. My D7500 arrives tomorrow and I am anxious to see if this works on that camera.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I "googled" it, and found all kinds of variations of this, but no "D" marking on any of them. Any info would be helpful.

Thank you

Its a Sigma full frame (DG) digital lens, likely used on your D50. It has the Nikon "D" communication chip to transmit Distance information to the cameras processor. It does have the screw drive AF system which will not AF on your D3400 but WILL AF just fine on your D7500. I recommend removing the filter for best results. Its actually a pretty good standard zoom lens and will give you the equivalent field of view of a 42-105mm lens on your crop sensor D7500. It was not made very long as it was soon replaced by the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG HSM lens. Have fun with it!

Thanks MT!!
I realize it is "faster" than the kit Nikon lens (18-55 3.5-5.6), but any idea on comparable image quality?

You rock!! Hope the outfitting for the adventure is going well!!

Its actually better image quality than the kit lenses, as well as being much more durable due to the metal mount and barrel. The design is old, going back to the original Manual Focus version of the early 1980's. It was updated to AF in 1988, and then to "D" version in 1991 before succumbing to the full F2.8 version in 1993. The only thing you will likely not appreciate is the slower focusing as caused by the mechanical screw drive system when compared to the 18-55mm kit lenses with AF-S or AF-P focus motors.

Preparations for the expedition are in "winter hold" status just waiting for Spring to resume. Still have 1 1/2 years before the trip begins so even I should make it in time! LOL

In my opinion, a lens not worth fussing with. I had quite a few of them old Sigma's and everyone was crap and I decided to never put a Sigma in front of any of my cameras again. That has changed with the introduction of their new Global Vision line of lenses, were Sigma is finally producing decent glass!
