My husband and I have been trying to learn Photoshop by watching various YouTube videos which has, for me, been a very frustrating and inefficient experience. What I need is a good instructional book (paper, not Kindle). We have Photoshop CC 2019 - any suggestions would be much appreciated!

No book is prfect, and you have lots of choices. Try your local library first. through the library loas system, you can borrow books from maybe a dozen different libraries. If you find a book you like, buy it.

Otherwise, you could spend years watching various types of online instruction. Adobe has a lot through tv.adobe.

It looks like that was replaced with helpx.adobe.

SAMS and Scott Kelby both had pretty good books out on PhotoShop. Not sure if they have been up dated.

As others have suggested, Scott Kelby has good info. If you want to spend the money you can sign up for the Kelby One classes which are excellent. Not limited to PS but also a lot of photo tips. They are go into great depth and are lesson by lesson. Not sure what the current cost is but only spend the money if you have time to sit and go through all of them.

It's not easy. There is so much you can do in PS, and so many ways to do it. An out of the box suggestion is to join a local photo club. Another is to visit https://www.retouchpro.com/ which will give you some outstanding ways to edit an image, or even restore a photograph - even if you are not into photo restoration or fashion-industry-quality retouching, the skills learned are completely transferrable and worth the effort.

I like the Photoshop Bible, (be warned, it is quite big, over 1000 pages), but it is written rather simple and covers pretty much every aspect of the program and does include a few tutorials as well!

Thanks for all your great suggestions! We just ordered the Adobe Photoshop Classroom Book - hopefully that, along with supplemental videos will bring us up to speed.

Back in my book buying days I had a routine that worked pretty well. I'd go to Barnes & Noble, pick out 2 or 3 (or 4) books, get a large coffee and find a table or nice couch. Then I had a few hypothetical questions in mind, e.g. "How do I use 'content-aware scale'?", or "How do I add a 'stroke?", or "What's the best way resize and print a photo?". Compare the answers in the books and decide which works best for you.

Happy hunting!

My go-to author for anything Photoshop or Lightroom is Martin Evening. He is quite thorough and detailed with a writing style that is easy to read but makes no attempts to be humorous like Kelby does, which I personally find annoying and disruptive when trying to learn.

I saw you already ordered a book. Just thought I would throw in another that I didn't see anyone mention - Photoshop CC, The Missing Manual by Lesa Snider. I used her book back when I had CS5 and found it very useful and user friendly.

Scott Kelby writes great Photoshop books. He has a book specific to Photoshop CC and his books on Photoshop Elements actually are usable with PS. Most of the same actions for Elements apply to PS. The elements books are great because they address specific actions you might want to take (paste in a person to a scene, clone out an object, etc) and you can just tab the book to get directly to what you need. I think the book on PS CC is similar. Go to your local book store and look through the Computer section (for some reason photography is buried in there).
