Keep an eye on your account to make sure they aren’t charging you despite your cancellation.

Excellent point

Yes, I have. Sneaky. I avoid all extras - surveys, discounts, memberships, etc. "Free" can be very deceptive. Yes, one thing will be free, but you'll have to pay for something else. Everyone wants your money, and they'll do whatever they can to get it. I try to deal only with known, reputable sellers.

People sometimes think that complaining to the CC company will get them out of something like that. Maybe not. If you agreed to the terms, even if you didn't actually read them, the CC company cannot void that contract.

cancel the credit card and close the account immediately. I had to do that several times. And get confirmation numbers form the CC company.

You have to be aware of someone trying to "upsell" you regarding anything remotely in tune with your purchase. They are doing their job. You have to do yours. You have to be aware at all times.

Regardless of the fact that the buyer online should beware. or be aware, of the attempted upsell, it is much more subtle online. it is nothing at all like another salesperson coming up to you in a store and nosing into the conversation. It is an interruptive, unwelcome, underhanded and unsavory act. Personally I find it despicable.

Have you experienced buying things on line where you suddenly discover that someone else is taking advantage of you by having you agree to something you thought was the firm you were dealing with? Like I was in the process of buying a Speedlite Flash when I was asked if I'd like $10 off the purchase price -- I quickly answered "yes" because the mailing was free of charge. Come to find out I was "talking" to someone not having anything to do with the firm I was dealing with and I was to pay a fee after one month until ???. The next day I finally was able to let the firm know I did not want anything to do with them.

Well, I was so angry I wrote this firm an Email saying, "When people are in the midst of purchasing anything - you interfere as though you were the SAME business person I was doing business with. I was dealing with a camera store and I don’t find that you had any business passing your “racket” on (to) me or ANYONE ELSE." The crooked business is called "FreeShipping.com".

Did any of you experience this type of scenario? What to do?

Seen it happen once to me but I was aware of the intrusion. I cancelled it out and went back to where I started. Usually I buy at B&H and it hasn't happened to me there at least not yet.

Every day more and more credit cards are being hacked (many from online purchases) only use a gift card and only put on it enough ($) to make your purchase.

Remember the credit card company is the company that losses the money with fraud. You lose the money with DEBET CARD>

Yes. I always say NO immediately on line. Not much there that I trust after a slip up while trying to upgrade the Mac OS. Pisser was that junkware seemed to have Apple name on it. Finally (appear to) got rid of all malware by trashing Google app!
Basically I now use the Net to gather information, then go to my local stores to buy the products. A few dollars more buys a lot of peace of mind.

I just had a similar incident like yours. I had just finished placing an order for printer ink by clicking the complete purchase button. Up popped a small window that said something about a confirmation email to my email address. I thought it was for the ink I had just ordered so clicked yes. Almost immediately another window replaced that one with choices for types of meals I wanted. I contacted both companies, meals and ink. I complained about the pop ups and denied any acceptance of the meal program with a firm comment that it was a very unacceptable practice. The ink company I advised they should block and/or disallow such practice on their website. I was informed that the agent would pass along my dissatisfaction regarding the pop ups for a different product or item.

Despite the meal company stating there was no indication of my name or email address in their system I did get an email thanking me for the order, to which I replied and declined any such offer. I also hit the "unsubscribe" button for good measure.
