Challenge: how would you photograph common clichés?
Example? Cliche subjects or phrases?

Interesting concept. Do you have one you can post to illustrate what you mean?
With animals and humor:
1. Three's a crowd.
2. Don't rock the boat.
But maybe those are idioms?
How about a literal visual:
3. Low hanging fruit

I wish I could remember where I saw the link. There was an article a couple of months ago where someone compiled iPhone images. The girl with her back to the camera standing on railroad tracks comes to mind. There were several other examples of how people copy something they saw somewhere and make pretty nice images lacking in originality but well executed.

Just say 'no' (unless you're being paid to photograph that subject).
The time you will spend coming up with a novel approach might be better directed elsewhere.
That said, it does help not to be using exactly the same medium as everyone else
They might be shooting ten different films in three different formats (large, medium
and miniature) and five different types of cameras (not brands, types).
Shooting color slide film causes you to select different subjects and exposures than,
say, B&W print film. Composing varies with format---especially if you are doing
it upside down on a ground glass.
I used to shoot a lot of infrared 135 film. There is only cliche in infrared: white trees.
If you photograph most subjects in infrared, you'll be the first one. But those
white trees do look great!
