I normally read UHH on my phone and have no need to download images. Today I read it on my desktop and tried to download. I assumed, perhaps incorrectly that when I clicked download the image would end up in my download file. The file was empty. Am I doing something wrong?

What did you do to try to download? And how?
If I click on the word "Download" under the image, it brings up only the downloaded image in the browser window.
If I want to save that image on my computer (also a download, different type though) I right mouse-click on the image and select "save image as...".

Clicking download opens up the image in a second window on my browser (I use Chrome). To actually download the image I double-click it, which gives me the option to save the file, which I only rarely do to try different edits. I try to save those in my Download directory so I can find them and delete them soon.

Right click + Save Image As saves to my download file. Problem solved! Thanks to you both...
