HELP: D7200 Autofocus Fail

Autofocus stopped working (D7200, 7 months use). Yesterday, I set many camera options to those recommended in Dave Busch's D7200 book. Camera was shooting OK after. Today, failed, not in middle of practice, but from start, so, ie, overnight. Battery at 88%. Camera has not been outdoors, so never below 67 degrees F. Actions so far without remedy:

1. Checked lens A / M switch set to A; checked body AF/M switch set to AF. Toggled between both & re-tested. No change.
2. Checked Focus Lock switch set to dot, not L. Toggled between both & re-tested. No change.
3. Checked AEL/AFL button. Toggled between both & re-tested. No change.
4. Removed the lens. Front and rear lenses spotless; lens is as new; never dropped or bumped. No filter. Definite click when re-seating the lens. Not bumping the lens release button when framing to shoot. No change
5. Changed lenses. Again, as new spotless undamaged lens, no filter, clicked home. No change. Changed lenses back. Re-checked everything. No change.
6. Powered Off, walked away for an hour; powered back up. No change.
7. Removed battery; waited half an hour; re-seated battery. No change.

Panicking now. No camera store for 3 hours; snowing. Don't really want to re-set camera to factory default settings. Would rather know whether in setting up the camera per Dave's book I've disabled AF. Or something else.

Most grateful for any help.

Since you've already set the camera up once, do the reset to default. From here you can again start over. It can be a half dozen different things you may have set improperly.. Unless you have an understanding of all the different settings this could take a lot of time, reset the camera, then take the time to read the manual and go through All the menus until you understand them.

Relax. It's only 7 months old so fully covered by warranty. Send it in to Nikon to have it checked out. Since you mention no error message it sounds like a possible PCB issue.

The camera was purchased in Australia and must be sent back to Australia for warranty repair. I'm in Alaska, so sending it back to OZ would wipe out all holiday use & much longer by the time it got back to Alaska. All shipping at my expense of course. So I was hoping to eliminate user / set-up errors first. I may have to do the reset, but I'm going through checking that I set everything 100% by the book first. "PCB" - is that printed circuit board in this context or something else?

PCB, Processor Control Board.

And if you bought it from an authorized Nikon dealer in OZ, and have the receipt and warranty slip, then Nikon USA will repair it under Nikons one year International warranty. You will need to send it to LA.

Hi, thanks for the advice. 1st, I went back through the settings I changed to check I had them correct. MOst were but some are not & I could not correct them (grey-outs preventing selection, eg, on White Balance setting - cannot be selected to change back to default). So, performed the 2-button re-set per user manual. Some settings have reverted to default (eg, JPEG settings) but others, like File naming, White Balance & more, did not revert. Also, still no AF. Re-read the reset instructions. Performed another reset; no change to the above & no AF.

Fully panicked now due to being in Alaska, on a sailboat, with a camera only warrantied in Australia.

Doing the reset at this point would be smart.

If you live in Australia, bought the camera in Australia, and carried it to the U.S. on vacation, Nikon USA should authorize repairs.

A very long shot but have you somehow set up for BBF (back button focus) and disabled AF activation from the shutter button without knowing it. I'm not conversant with the D7200 or if this is reverted after a reset.

Brilliant!

I just checked my D7200. If you set A4 to AF-ON ONLY you must set F4 to AF-ON. If you don't, you have effectively shut off AF

To the OP

If you want 'Back Button Focus' go to custom setting F4 and select AF ON
If you want to focus with the half press of the shutter button go to custom setting A4 and select Shutter/AF ON

Edit my original response - missed that you’d already checked what I suggested. At this point, it sounds as though a reset is in order.

1. Does it AF in Live View ?

2. Does it have "User" or "Custom" modes
on its mode dial ? If so, go to a never used
User/Custom mode and see if you get AF.

3. Does it have a "Push Here Dummy" mode
on the mode dial ... usually colored green ?
If so, that mode usually ignores everything
you altered .... IOW, it's ALWAYS at factory
default cuz it's for idjitz. Green mode turns
any enthusiast camera into an overweight
P&S, whenever it's engaged. Do you have
AF in in PHD/P&S mode ?

If you have AF in even one scenario above,
the camera suffers only from UE syndrome
so nothing needs repair services.

Bill_de - you sure are brilliant. A4 was set to AF-ON ONLY; have set to Shutter / AF-ON. Have not messed with F4 - it's at default. Wish I could buy you a beer or 3. Thanks to all but huge thanks to Bill.

You are welcome. But if it wasn't for Grahame I never would have thought of those settings being the culprit. That beer better come with 2 straws.
