What am I, I shot this handheld on 300mm zoom lens. The side lighting hurts the picture a lot. We have Cooper hawks and Red Tail and even an occasional Harrier Hawk. This bird is big!

I agree with Linda, it looks like a Red Tail to me also.

Even in that lighting a red tail would have a more vivid tail I think we are looking at a buteo

I agree it's a Red-tailed Hawk. The overall body shape is correct, the tail is relatively short and correctly shaped. The posture is typical of a Red-tail. The light underparts and, throat along with the light tip of the tail suggests it is of the Eastern race.
