Sigma 70 to 200 2.8 for Nikon

Hi! I recently purchased the sigma 70-200 2.8 for my D7000 crop sensor.

Ive been using this lens for about a month and am very disappointed. Before purchase I also tried the tameron version and loved the sharpness and color but did not buy as it did not have image stabilization.

I'm not thrilled about color, sharpness and seems overall not as crisp although the OS works very well. The reviews were very favorable for this much less expensive allternative to the Nikon.

I know that this lens is designed for a full sensor, would that matter?

Anyone else have this experience.

Ed

I always rent before I buy and your posting helps confirm my attitude about renting before buying. I'd try the lens on another body and see if it is the lens1

I sold my Nikon 80-200mm F2.8 after trying this Sigma out and bought it. The lens focused light years faster than the older Nikon. The glass on mine is at least as sharp as the Nikon if not sharper. I love this lens and use it regularly on both my D7000 as well as my D800E with excellent results.

I really like my sigma 70 - 200mm. Do you have some sample pics? The d7000 has a "fine tune" adjustment - it could be your lens/camera combo is front or back focusing. That could be corrected with the fine-tune.

Are you shooting in RAW or JPEG? I think the d7000 has two versions of RAW too ... one that is totally flat (no adjustments) and one that does have some adjustments.

As far as crop sensor .. it should actually help a little - would cut off vignette and any softness at the edges of the pic.

Never knew about the fine tunes, I do shoot in raw and will check that out.

Thanks again....

i have this lens, only the canon version and use it on a 7d, which is a crop sensor. mine performs exactly as mtshooter has described his. it's the sharpest lens i have ever owned.

here's a shot just taken sunday evening with the 70-200 sigma on a canon 7d...

Are you using a glass "protection" filter on the front of the lens ? If so, take it off.

I am using a good quality skylight filter. How else would I protect my filter?

Unless you are shooting somewhere that there is lots of flying debris, take that filter off the lens! It will only degrade your image and will give you no advantage!
Lens manufacturers spend MILLIONS getting the optics right in a lens, one piece of cheap glass on the front of that lens and all that work goes to waste.

I use a round metal hood and then cap the hood with either a plastic pinch cap or an elastic slip over "hoodie" . You leave the hood in place ALL the time and get a case that will accomodate the hood being left on. That's the way I do it.
