My first 3 years n the Corp I had an M1 Garand, 30-06 then the M14 finished up with the M16.
The M1 was 10 times better. I always wanted an M1 but I could never find one in decent shape. About 10 years ago we are on a trip and stop at this sporting store in upstate NY. I'm looking at the rifle rack no M1's my wife tells me to ask the guy if he has any. I did. He did!!!! It was in really good shape. It was manufactured in 1943 it saw action in WW 2 and Korea. I was born in 1943. I bought it. It is a heavy ass rifle but I love it.

I belong to Veteran's Salty Humor where we poke fun at each other.
Real founding of the Marines.

Lol! I think it's a healthy and more appreciative society when we can laugh at ourselves and at the same time respect one another with some much needed levity from the sometimes trying surroundings.

Great for your wife to understand how you feel about the M1. I am always looking but the prices are really high.

Now, as aged as I am, I'm giggling! Definitely would not have giggled after graduating from Parris Island! Many of us had serious attitude problems if I remember correctly!

I do at times feel badly about disparaging fellow service member who chose other paths...we were young! We all served and did a part!

It’s all good, DaveO.
The “disparaging” is all good as long as it comes from “one of us”.

A few years ago a friend of mine, ex-Air Force, and I were swapping various insults about our respective branches over drinks and dinner. Another friend, not a vet, joined us and added his own comments. It was obvious he didn’t get it, that while we had the right to “insult” each other, he hadn’t earned that right. He apologized and offered to buy a round of drinks. We graciously accepted, enjoyed the drinks, and when the bill came for what we’d eaten and drank before he joined us we handed it to him....and left.

Semper fi!

I don't know which was more fun, Pendleton or Lejeune!

All I knew was Pendelton and the DMZ. I didn't get around much, so I can't help you.

I realized Saturday that the Marine Corps Birthday when I was in Boot camp was for the 192 birthday, and I was 20 years old.
Time seems to have flown by.
I'm glad the Corps has aged better over the past 51 years, in spite of the changes many may lament.
Still proud to be a "Marine" veteran.

I was not a Marine (AF) but my father was in WWII (was on Iwo Jima) and in Korea. I am honored to know a lot of Marine vets. Once a Marine, always a Marine.

Happy belated birthday Marines!

I still have an old friend who did the South Pacific campaigns and does not talk about Iwo Jima.

My Dad never spoke about it either - or anywhere else he was. I watched the mini-series The Pacific and read With the Old Guard by Eugene Sledge and gained more of an appreciation for some of what those Marines went through.
