Feeling frustrated by this yearâs blah fall here in PA, I dug through my files and pulled up this image from a couple of years ago. After massaging and tweaking it I decided to post it here. The bridge is the historic Roebling between Laxawaxen PA and Minisink Ford, New York and is the oldest cable suspension bridge in the United States

I feel your pain too. CT and western MA are pretty dull this year. I had to do some research when I saw your photo, suspension bridge? Where are the cables? Thanks for expanding my knowledge base. Greg.

Nice photo Rich1939 of an interesting structure. This is the first example of a suspension bridge I’ve seen with the cables contained in the structure instead of above the structure. Thanks for sharing
Wow, interesting. I had the same thought as gjgallager. Where are the cables? Looked it up on line to discover the history of the bridge. Never too old to learn something new. Thanks for the post.

Good question!
The original bridge was built as an aqueduct to allow barges on the Delaware and Hudson canal to cross the Delaware. when the bridge was renovated the Parks Dept reverted to the original build method which had the cables enclosed within the walls of the aqueduct.
Nicely taken and processed.
Nice pic. I'm familiar with this bridge, have been over it several times. I remember when it was a toll bridge.
That is the Roebling Delaware aqueduct, not the Roebling suspension bridge.
That is the suspension bridge. The cables can't be seen individually in the pic. The part of the bridge you are looking at contains the suspension wiring. It is very ingenious and merits a trip to see it. This is also the home of Zane Gray. It is a most beautiful area.

Interesting bridge!!!
I had to look hard to find/see the large cable in the frame work.

It was converted to road traffic a long time ago.
For those who might be interested, here is a look at what is now a pedestrian and vehicle (one lane) bridge. It's my understanding that as an aqueduct the water level was up to where the vertical siding stops.

The Zane Gray house faces about ENE and to get an image with good sun light on it means getting up early. I'm 79, I don't get up early!
But here is an image I captured with an eye to pulling up the shadows.
(it is almost exactly 1/4 mile up river from the bridge)
