Great series, Phil! I certainly share your love of the winter wetlands! I’m so glad this early visit was so rewarding for you.😊

I spent this past Thur and Fri visiting my favorite northern Sacramento Valley wildlife refuges. I don't usually stat my visits to these winter waterfowl migration wetlands until late November. It was an early visit, it was warm and the mosquitoes were very active, but the Snow Geese, White-fronted Geese, Pintail, Northern Shoveler and other ducks are all beginning to show up. All of the usual suspects were also present. In more than 55 years of regular visits to the Sacramento NWR I have never had the good fortune to see a Kestrel there. This photo is flawed, you can'™t see her eye, but dang.....it's a Kestrel.....in morning light!

Thanks Carol! It is a two hour drive and I start early and stay overnight so I can have the light of two mornings and at least one evening. I won't need to work so hard at motivation for the next trip. I appreciate your affection for winter birding.

I can't think of a better way to spend two perfect days, and you were well rewarded, Phil! All just beautiful..and congrats on your kestrel! How I'd love to see one of those. We're supposed to have them here, but I haven't had the pleasure yet.

Hi Donna, I just notice the response I wrote to your comment has been lost in the ether or I failed to hit the send button. Kestrels are everywhere and very elusive. I can count the number I have seen, 4. Yours is out there. I also saw an American Bittern (photo too poor to show), another bird I rarely see. Those two day trips have always had their pleasant rewards but I look forward to some much needed rain. Thank you for the kind comment my friend.

Thanks for the comment erbiv. For such a widely distributed species, they are elusive. Good luck in your hunt!

Thanks Corky! We are still pretty dry out here but the waterfowl season is on.
