Im still a relative rookie at photography Nikon D7000 shooting in mostly manual mode Have been reading a ton of articles, books, and tutorials on photography and lightroom 4. Ive developed a keen interest in Macro photography hence an upcoming purchase of a Nikon 105 mm 2.8 AFS VR
lens. Ive been following the Macro forum and am amazed at the photos!! My question is on the lighting aspect.... specifically the O Ring Flash unit similar to what Nikonian72 uses any thoughts pro or con ??? would this be a good fit for my cam and lens ?? any other suggestions ??

I have owned my O-Flash attachment for 2-years, one of the first in the U.S. I slightly modified my unit, which increased flash output by about 1.5-stops: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nikonian72/4689213154/in/set-72157623703013085 I understand that some recent owners have found the modification already completed by seller. I paid US$40 for my O-Flash (on eBay, shipped from Hong Kong), which are now available for $25 from U.S. suppliers.

I routinely shoot hand-held at ISO 400, 1/200-sec at f/22, usually 8-inches to 18-inches WD. I can open aperture if more light needed, and turn down my SB-600 if less light needed.

The mounted O-Flash is no more heavy, nor more bulky, than other, much more expensive macro-lighting systems. It is much more powerful than LED "constant light" macro lighting systems. I find the O-Flash attachment ideal for field macro-photography.

I checked the website - Gadget infinity and they list them for alot of Nikon models but not the D7000. Seems the difference is just the distance from center of flash to center of lens. I am using a Nikon SB-700. Does it make much of a difference? I haven't measured my center-to-center distance yet.

Now I have to find a dealer that ships to Canada at a reasonable price!!!

Correct! The SB-600 & SB-700 are the same size. To find the best model number, just measure in millimeters, the distance between flash lens center to macro lens center. Each camera model is a different height, so accurate measurement is necessary. I use a model F160 for my SB-600 mounted on either my Nikon D5000 or D90 (same height).

I shoot a Nikon D7000 with an O-Flash model F179. I use a Yongnuo YN 560 manual speedlight. I have other speedlights, but this manual works great for this, and is the size & same power as a Nikon SB-900.

I have shot a few photos using Nikonian's setup mounted on my D5100, and although it's inexpensive, it is a SWEET setup, and easy to use.....I vote yes!

Reflective mylar is the silvered plastic "foil" used to wrap potted Christmas Poinsettia plants, etc. Printed design on outside; pure reflective silver coating on inside. You only need a few small pieces, so scraps from a florist work just fine. Same material as shiny metallic balloons.

Silvered Mylar sheeting is so easy to find. Large grocery stores with a flower department, or any florist will have have scrap silvered mylar available for free.
