Also when camera makers update operating firmware versions for the camera to do more and/or with better performance, then lenses may also need to be firmware updated to take advantage of new features.

That comes back to my reason for the question. I've not updated my 50mm f/1.4 lens since I got it and I've not seen any degradation of image quality. So I just have to wonder.......

The updates are not usually for image quality, but for better performance, like autofocusing, burst shooting, lens correction etc.
