I recently bought a new 18-200 nikon lens and today it was sticking at around 70mm but sometimes it didn't. Also it is making a loud grinding noise when trying to focus. It also makes this noise when I put the battery in or turn the camera on. It will eventually focus with some effort. It does not appear to be the camera because other lenses are working fine.It is a nikon 3400. Will it cost more to fix the lens than buying a new one or refurbished. HELP!
Any ideas would be helpful.

If recently purchased it should be under warranty. Fixing should be no charge. Contact Nikon for returning for repair.

I bought the same lens off eBay. 41 days later it did the same thing, eventually not even manually focusing. The seller refused to work with me since the 30 day eBay guarantee was up.

Was yours new? If so, it should be under warranty. If bought off eBay, seller should refund you the money and pay to ship it back.

Here is what the OP said. "I recently bought a new 18-200 nikon lens and today..."

If it was from BnH within the last 30 days you need to call them

And your point? If it was brand new, it should be a no-brainer that he contact the place from where he bought it since it has at least a one-year warranty. Since he asked about the cost of fixing it, I assumed it was “new” to him; otherwise why ask about having to purchase another one?

Here in Australia we return faulty new items to the point of purchase...not the manufacturer...(Nikon)
I guess it must be different in the US...?

We send it to the seller for exchange, refund or replacement. It goes to the manufacturer for repair.

Yes, the same here except the dealer replaces the item to the buyer and then returns the item...when I read return to Nikon for repair I thought the buyer returned it, is this the case..?

You’re correct in both instances. When we say return to Nikon for repair, it generally refers to sending it to one of their USA authorized repair facilities, who then may or may not send it to the factory for actual repair.

My first thought is; hard telling not knowing. How can you expect someone here to give you a cost to repair the problem?

Depending on how recent "recently" is, I'd return it and get another. Otherwise, make use of the warranty. My 18-200mm worked fine. Since it's new, the repair should be covered. If you have to pay for the repair, buying a used lens might be a better choice. Below are recent sales on eBay.
