From a composition viewpoint alone, it's outstanding. It rivets one attention, just wondering if one of those animals is going to break formation.

I too really liked the photo. The composition is great, it just grabs your attention and compels you to study it.
I do think it could use some adjusting of the lighting and contrast. Perhaps lighten the shadows a bit.
But overall, very cool.

Thanks very much for your suggestion. I will try to lighten the shadows.

Love the pano crop...and it is explicit that the border collie knows that his charges know that he knows his job!

No need to be told what the story is here. The only problem I have with the darkness is with the black faces. I suspect that if you lightened the shadows enough to lighten the faces, the other shadows would be too bright and the shot would lose much-needed contrast. Perhaps selectively lightening some of the darker faces might be enough.

Composition and crop is spot-on Edie - but it does need brightening-up a bit.

Thank you, ALL, for your critique.

Spot brightening is the consensus!

Will do it!

I find the other's comments to be of value, the dark areas for one. Additionally, I'm not as fond of the crop as some have expressed. The reason is it appears cramped for space. The situation portrayed in the photo might be more forcefully portrayed with a bit more space, especially above the flock. This would depict the dog's ability to manage the herd even better, as there is more space for them to wander off.

Thank you for the attachment. It provided a better opportunity to view the shot. And the shot is great.

I agree with the idea of lightening it a bit to bring out certain aspects. One adjustment, for me, would be to have a shot that has more of the dog's face showing, such as more of the snout pointing to the sheep.

Was there a human shepherd providing signals? It would suggest it by the positioning of the dog.

Good work.

I was arguing with myself about how much space to leave around. While I was going for the tension between the flock and the dog, space for maneuverability certainly would have enhanced the goal.

LESSON LEARNED: Don't delete the original! I was in a hurry to edit these photos, and boy! have I learned my lesson!

Thanks for your comment.

Yes, there was a human shepherd signaling by hand, but he was far away, especially for the lens that I was using.
Unfortunately, this shot was catch-as-catch-can. Being able to show the sheep's faces and the dog's would have been ideal. When I try to lighten some of the faces, perhaps I can do something with the muscles in the dog's back to show more tension.

Thanks for the comment!

Edie, the only deadline you have, unless I'm horribly mistaken, is one you set for yourself. Don't hurry. Enjoy the exploration of your photographic artistry.
