Not that it really matters at this point but the 77D and the 80D do not use the same image sensor. They are very similar but they are not the same. Canon is constantly working on improving their image sensors while trying to keep costs competitive. The image sensor in the 77D uses newer technology than was available when the 80D was introduced. The newer sensor technology coupled with the more advanced digic 7 processor and software make the 77D the better choice if going for better image quality alone. That plus cost also make the 77D quite attractive. But, the 77D is still the top of the line Rebel, not that there's anything wrong with that. The similarly in the image quality plus additional functionality very well may make the 80D the better choice. Me personally, I'm waiting for the 90D to hit the streets.

Thanks for that information. I've been a Canon user for 15 years. I have not lost my enthusiasm or respect for Canon with the newly acquired Sony RX10 IV.

Your respect is dully noted. But you have not seen the new EOS R mirrorless. It is NOTHING like the M series of Canon mirrorless camera. The M series is only here to fill a small niche in the Canon lineup where people want really small ML camera and lenses. Although, I see that they are still creating more M series lenses for the M series of ML cameras.

The new R series of camera is a completely new design that Canon is going to expand upon including the ER lenses they are designing from the ground up for the professional photographer. The balance the EOS R has with it's new lenses, and with all the EF lenses is more like the balance you'd expect with this new camera. Even the ER lenses are quite large, some are even larger than the EF L series lenses. I've had them in my hands. Plus the new design has a larger circumference mount allowing more communication pins which gives Canon the ability to add more features to the new lenses they have out now, and future lenses that will no doubt be nothing short of spectacular. You should see the new ER 28-70mm f/2 L USM lens. Even the new RF50mm f/1.2 USM lens is outstanding in all respects. It's also much larger than a EF50mm f/1.4;

So far they have a 28-70 f/2L USM, 24-105 f/4 IS USM, RF35mm f/1.8 IS STM lens and a RF50mm f/1.2 USM and promises to make many more that will eventually obsolete the EF series mount.

This new series of camera by Canon is going to be a winner. Even though this first EOS R is not a pro camera body, since is lacks dual cards, and is not as weather proof as the 5 and 1 series bodies, they will have pro ML bodies soon. I would bet the farm on this.

$3400 for this body is pretty high end. I'd love to have one when my 5dMKIII and 5DSR finally become obsolete.

The EOS R body alone is $2299. With the 24-105F4L it's 3399. The cheapest EF-RF adapter is $99; this adapter is the only one currently available.

I'm glad you have not lost your enthusiasm for Canon because you need to see what they are doing. Here's some more info on the new ER series of lenses currently available:

As Peterberg pointed out it's only $2300 and another $100 for the adapter for any and all of Canon EF and EF-s lenses. This camera is positioned between the 5D IV and the 6D II. Hence the price is between those two as well.

Oh, one more thing - This new mirrorless has "eye detection". Which is like 'face detection' but better. With lenses like the 50mm f/1.2 you might like the eye detection so that you can get the closest eye sharp. I've seen this in action at the Canon Center preview of the camera a week before it's release. Very cool.

I forgot to mention that it also has the best low light focusing of any camera on the market today bar none. It can still focus when it is almost pitch black.

I have the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 along with the 300mm f/2.8 and 400mm f/2.8 primes. I found that the focuses achieved on my Canon cropped-sensor [APS-C] cameras did not compared to that achieved on my full framed cameras. In any case, be sure to micro-adjust all lenses to cameras.
