When you post a photo with exif data attached, can the viewer also trace the steps you did during processing or what programs you used?

Thanks, Stan. Is there an exif viewer program you use? I tweak some photos a lot on LR, sometimes add Windows Photos tweaks, sometimes use other programs. And sometimes I see other people's photos that I wish I could see how they got there.

It's amazing what data you can mine in an image file!

Thanks, Linda! I think I saw this link before and just tried it out on someone's recent posting. What a lot of info in a small package!

If I'm hijacking this post, everybody ignore me and someone yell at me but is there somewhere that will tell me how to understand all that information.

Do you use post-processing programs? I use Lightroom and I recognize some of the color tweaking and other steps that go into post processing. All that luminance info, for instance. There are presets that do it for you or you can use color sliders for tone, saturation, and luminance. And then there are dehaze, exposure, etc. The info might be useful to better understand how the resulting photo was tweaked.
You would be completely lost if you looked at my exif data since I tend to throw stuff at the screen until it sticks..

Like BlueMorel, I understand some of the terms from my editor, PS Elements. I'm not sure how valuable any of it is, though, if you don't have experience with editing raw files.

The best way to learn them is to dive right in with your editor of choice. One tip I remember from early on is if you want to see what a certain slider does, push it all the way to the right (and there will be definitions of the labels in your Help section)

PS Elements' version of the Adobe raw editor include the below (among others):
Exposure 2012 0.00
Contrast 2012 +10
Highlights 2012 -9
Shadows 2012 +34
Whites 2012 -5
Blacks 2012 -28
Clarity 2012 +38

I don't know what the "2012" is, unless it's the software year. But without seeing the photo, I can determine that exposure was what the photographer desired at time of shooting (0 adjustment), but it seems as though there may have been harsh lighting because he/she is reducing the highlights (-9) and lightening the shadows (+34) in order to get some detail in those extremes.

But then I am stumped because the blacks are being darkened by quite a bit (the "tones" in an image, simply put: blacks, middle gray, whites). For me, the slider for blacks and the slider for shadows seem to go hand in hand and I don't know if I would move one to minus and one to plus. So now I'm very curious to see which photo goes with this data in order to learn more!

Another bit of interest for you from this list: see how saturation of each color can be adjusted individually. My own software does not offer the option to adjust aqua, purple or orange.

I am by no means an expert but I HAVE found a difference between shadow and black, especially when converting to bw. I find increasing black often makes blacks stand out whete shadow adds a mote subtle change, and my use my black slider more.
