Trying to decide between Sony A7lll and Fuji XT-3

Hi All, I have a huge dilemma after doing a lot of research on the Sony A7lll and the Fuji XT-3! The main difference for me is the touch screen. I just cannot be quick with the Sony, I borrowed one, and found it absolutely mind boggling to change the settings. As I am a Canon shooter I found the Fuji easier. The reason for a mirrorless is that I need to carry it while hiking here in the Sierras, I just find the Canon too heavy. I realize the Sony is a full frame and the Fuji is an APSC. Would appreciate any thoughts to help me decide. Thanks in advance.

Hi I found the Fuji a bit better to grip and the controls are easier to use as they are external and there is not much fiddling with menus on the screen as in the Sony, thus making shooting that sudden thing that appears out of nowhere a bit quicker to capture. Saying that, the Sony is a fine camera.

Both cameras are great. Assuming you will buy a complement of lenses for either system, Fuji will win on overall less weight and cost. Some folks think Fuji doesn’t have enough lenses for their X series mirrorless cameras. They have 43-46 lenses, and counting. I can’t imagine someone not being able to find what they need, and their glass is superb.

Full disclosure, I shoot with an XT-2 and X100F, so I guess I’m guilty of being biased. Weight and overall cost was a big consideration for me. I’m very happy with the Fuji system.

Good luck!

I vote for the Sony. You want a FF camera. And I have had a lot of Sony cameras lens etc.
The menus can be annoying. But the features, sensor technology and imagery is superb.
Good luck either is great.

I opted for the Sony because it is full frame. A little trick with the touchscreen is this: While looking through the viewfinder, tap the screen and then move your finger on the screen to move the focus point. I generally have the focus mode set to single. I found that setting it to wide, the camera often picks the wrong area to focus on and I like to be in control as to what I want in focus. I watched several YouTube videos to decide how I wanted to set the camera up through the menus. Once set, I rarely go back to the menus. The most used menu options can now be put in "My menu". I had the Sony a6000 previously, so I was used to the the menu system.

It sounds like you are leaning towards the Fuji. I've read a lot of great things about it. Handle both cameras and pick the one that feels right. You can't go wrong with either one.

I would think that much of your decision will be affected by the lens(es) you plan to hike with ~ have you come to that conclusion?

Now that is a hard decision. The Fuji is lighter and smaller with an arguably better human interface, while the Sony has the advantages associated with FF - ie: a full stop better at low light high ISO performance and DR. Both have excellent quality lenses. All depends on your shooting priorities - weight/size (and controls) or high ISO/DR performance and what feels better in your hands. I love my FF Canon for low light and sports (of which I shoot a lot), but I carry a Fuji for travel and a “walk-around” Camera when the subjects aren’t so demanding and 1/3 the weight is important.

I'm not seeing that the Fujifilm X-T3 is that much smaller. What am I not understanding?

I would think that the lenses one chooses, may have more bearing in a size/weight comparison...no?

I probably wasn’t clear - I was referring to the total system weight, and since the Sony is FF, the lenses will be substantially heavier.

Yes, exactly! And that’s the point. The X-T3 is an excellent APS-C crop sensor camera. All their lenses are lighter than lenses for FF cameras.

If you want FF, then you’ll have heavier lenses. But the X-T3 is an excellent APS-C crop sensor camera, with smaller and lighter lenses.

That’s the choice you have. I guess the other point is ... there was a time when FF was the only way to go for professionals and serious photographers. But thanks to the miracle of technology, we see the beginnings of a paradigm shift going on in the Photography world.

And that’s the beauty ... choices! Everybody gets the camera system they want!

If you get the GMaster Lenses, they would be the heavier but better choice. I have 3 lenses for my Sony and that’s all I’ll ever have. If those three won’t do the job, I’ll use the Nikon D500, for which I have a wider selection. But, I’m not REPLACING my DSLR with mirrorless, I’m SUPPLEMENTING. Each camera serves a different purpose.

I recently moved from APS-C (Nikon D500) and M43 (Olympus EM1 mark II) to a Sony A7III and A7II full frame. In low light/high ISO I really see the difference: the A7III is brilliant. In good light the difference in quality is far less discernable, expecially if you only view your images electronically. Though the XT-3 is undoubtedly a great camera, Fuji holds no interest for me. I would never change my A7III for anything currently available, but will change my A7II for an A9.

I have a a7III and am waiting for the hottest lens in the market right now. Tamron 28-75 F2.8. Light, superb reviews and online photos. It will be a single lens that can do most of what I want in shooting. For Longer reach, I have a 70-300, but don't use it much as I don't need the reach that much.

Take your time and read reviews and comparisons. A little difference between them can make a big difference to you.
