Lynsey Addario:I didn't understand how to read light and anticipate shots.

Lynsey Addario :journalistic photographer. "I wasn't as adept with the camera. I didn't understand how to read
light and anticipate shots." Addario is a pulitzer winner. Was looking at conversation about her new book. "Of Love & War"
Her photos are stunning. Her composition. The color. Her skills working with foreigners in difficult places in the world. He fears.
She admits she is always nervous going out to shoot. Her comment "I wasn't adept with the camera/How to read light/anticipate shots"
was a wake up call for me. Now I can prepare my cameras, get set up, make the the right lens is on, so I can have the op to take a
good picture. Do we take more or less gear. What do we think we will see at that location. What kind of shooting. A wake up call.
Simple but powerful for me. You can see some of her photos if you google her name. I think the expectation pressure of getting
a good shot or clip is always with us. I have been shooting a lot of video the last few years. Run & gun shots or video are
improvisational and I think I am good at doing it on the fly and talking to people when I have to interview. But I struggle with making
decisions and lensing and gear all the time. My expectation with stills is not sure.

A serious photographer will make time to study and apply the rigors of image composition along with proper exposure while accounting for the importance of subject. Otherwise, the photographer may produce work not much more than snapshots, as here.

Ignorance of the operation of photography puts the shooter at the mercy of happenstance.

Photography functions as a craft. As such, it requires much practice while learning from mistakes and successes. Over time, the student of photography will gain enough control over the process to create worthy photographs.

The photographer Minor White once said, "It takes ten years to learn photography." Very little has changed except that digital photography with its instant feedback can shorten the turnaround time for learning from results. Pretenders look for shortcuts or excuses.

Meanwhile, nothing substitutes for doing plenty of photography with informed intention and having eyes open to everything.

I just looked at her site; I like her images.

I noticed that her horizons are all tilted noticeably to the right.

Yes, she's unschooled in the rigors of composition and makes excuses.

I enjoyed learning of her background. I've seen her photos on National Geographic's daily email site, didn't know they were hers until brought to our attention. Thanks, Tom.(:

Ms. Addario goes into dangerous places with war and political messes. Not the easiest. She admits
to being afraid. She has been kidnapped twice. The biggest scare in Libya. As for comments her work to
me has amazing composition. Interesting observation that a lot of her shots have slanted horizon.
The photo of the the women walking away in black is the one that stands out for me.
"A serious photographer will make time to study....." post it reminds me
some find the need to lecture others I accept that. But admitting doubt and the wish to
revisit you work skill and taking work to another level is being human. And that is what
this photographer does. At the risk of her life.
Enjoy sharing thoughts on the HOG about the art of life and photography.

These images are amazing, Tom. The uneven horizons are metaphor for the unstable and precarious condition of life that her subjects are living through. However, the subjects are usually depicted as carryon the best that they can manage and with dignity as is the case above with the all of the mothers including the expectant young woman. During the Vietnam War,' Reporters Without Borders ' listed 63 photographers among the dead or missing. There was no going back for them. They stayed with the conflict showing the heavy toll of human suffering. Thanks again for highlighting this photographer's work.

Debbie I want to one last thing. I in recent years have been very aware of women's and girls lives
being difficult. I am a supporting my daughter who wrote a book "Cooking with Leo" in her quest
to be an entrepreneur with an autistic child. I am supporting all the women I know and am a feminist.
A lot of Ms. Addario's work is about the women of the world that need to be protected and loved.
Thanks again. Tom
