I bought it for a friend who owns a D500 and he isn't particularly technicaal and he's found it very good too. He keeps asking John questions every now and then about settings etc. and always gets a reply. I am glad my post helped. I personally have his Fast Start Course on the Canon 5D Mk IV and I found it excellent and very comprehensive. You can see some of my photographs (not all with the 5D Mk IV) at:

Does anyone know if there is a link where I could find a follow along instruction course for The d500. The guide would go thru the different options and what basic settings to begin with in different shooting situations. Lens suggestions need to be included and being able to use ones owned. Instructions to follow in a situation, whether it be portraits, inside, outside, fast action low light etc) a basic starting point is suggested then it would have you continue to follow other settings to fine tune and see. The exercises would detail for example, set the aperture on .... then take a shot, then change the aperture to.... or maybe the shutter adjustment if that didn't work. Setting, shooting then seeing the results with direction. Then if needs more corrections other options would be suggested and listed., ISO shutter speed etc. to try. Maybe this would more of a workbook to guide and to follow exercises that show the different results that occur. List of assignments in specific situations to test the setting options and which lens to try and see and learn to get the results you want.

Thank you for any assistance you can offer.
Happy Halloween.

My friend,

I have a D500 which is a wonderful DSLR, in my opinion. My passion is landscape and wildlife and with the 10fps you have in the D500, you can get tack sharp photos. I have learned a tremendous amount from a gentleman by the name of Spyros Heniadis. Sypros offers an online series of lessons teaching you how to move away from auto settings into manual mode. The lessons are extremely affordable at just $69. and you get a multitude of lessons, exercises at the end of each lesson and you are able to email Spyros with any questions you might have. I should add that he personally answers your email questions in a very timely manner. I have become very proficient using manual mode with my D500 in a very short period of time. Of course, you will need to practice often in order to commit what you learn to memory. Spyros also offers a very comprehensive course in Lightroom as well for the same low price of $69. Both courses are downloadable so you can reference them as many times as needed and you have unlimited access to his email address for questions.

Good luck and enjoy that amazing D500. I'm in love all over again. I started with a D3400 and quickly graduated to the D500.

Thank you so much for the reference. I have not familiar with him. Will check him out. There are so many talented and smart photographers out there with their own style and teaching method. As we all know some click better than others teaching us the craft. Definitely will check him out!!

It is hard to beat this book. https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/david-buschs-nikon-d500-guide-to-digital-slr-photography-david-d-busch/1124623147?ean=9781681981482&st=PLA&sid=BNB_Nook%20Catch-All,%20Low&sourceId=PLABiNA&dpid=tdtve346c&2sid=Bing_c&msclkid=cc26c109d30a132c776a9ad321e4b0bb

With that out of the way. My favorite way to learn to use anything NEW is Utube video's.

You do need some basic understanding of the exposure triangle, AF, and metering to use Dave Busch's guide, but I really like the format of the book especially where to set the controls early on, then explaining why they are set that way through the rest of the book. Also agree youtube tutorials are extremely helpful.
