Opinions Wanted - Should I buy this second camera body?

I have a chance to purchase a Canon 30D body only (no lens, just camera body, 2gb media card, battery and battery charger) for $150.00.

I currently have a Canon T3i, and have been wanting to get a secondary camera body but really don't have a lot of money in my gear acquisition fund. I currently have two lenses, both of which I use often, and I was thinking that I would put my 85mm prime on the T3i since I have had amazing results with that combo, and put my Sigma 18-250 on the 30D. That way, no lens changing.

I did some research, and I do understand that the 30d is an older model. My current t3i has more megapixels, larger and articulating veiwfinder and video capabilities and a few other things, but the 30d still seems to be a decent camera...has a pentraprism instead of the pentamirror and appears to offer faster continuous shooting and max shutter speed which would be handy for shooting my daughter's soccer games and such...it doesn't offer video, but I don't use video.

So my question is: do you think that 150.00 "investment" into an older camera model makes sense? Would I love to buy the 60d? Yes! But as I mentioned, funds prohibit that sort of monetary investment at this time. But, I really do want a second camera body and I was hoping my fellow Hedgehoggers might help me with this and give me some opinions. (My husband doesn't get it at all, he doesn't understand that a photographer could have four camera body and be quite happy. He was like, what do you need another camera body for? My response? It's not about NEED, it's about WANT! :-D )

So I guess bottom line questions are: does anybody out there use a 30D and are you happy with it? And secondly, is 150.00 for a 7 year old model a smart move or not?

Opinions welcome, and thank you so much for helping me validate (LOL) my desire for more gear.

The Canon 30D came out in 2006 which isn't a lifetime as far as DSLR's go. Back in "06" it cost a little over $1100.00. Seems to have most of the featurs you would want in a DSLR. It has good low light performance. Your getting a DSLR body for the price of a lower level point&shoot, if it were me, I would grab it. Good luck!

I still have my 30D and use it often (especially in harsher settings). It is a solid work horse that has never given me any problems despite 5+ years of use and abuse.
I paid $1700 for it in 2006 (with a lens) and if I saw a decent 30D body today I would grab it!
The 30D is great camera and a good compliment to your T3si (shared accessories and lenses). As an inexpensive backup, it is a no brainer.

Thank you cjkorb and Festina Lente! I thought it was a no-brainer too, but without another photog in the house to bounce ideas off of, I was hesitant. But no longer - I AM going to go for it.

Thanks again for your time and input, appreciate it!

I'm glad we could be of service. Good luck.

PS: Check the camera out with one of your AF lenses to make sure all works OK.
Also see if you get the battery charger with the body; it is a $50 item to replace but came with the body when it was new...). That may be one reason the price is so attractive...

You may need to buy a new battery however. After almost 6 years, the original battery will be near the end of its life cycle and not hold a charge for very long. Amazingly my original D30 battery still works, but I also carry two newer spares JIC.

I will definitely be bringing my Sigma 18-250 to test it out and make sure all seems to be okay. The lady that has offered it to me is a friend of the family, so I am "assuming" (you know what they say) that it's okay or she would risk embarrassing herself to the entire family by selling me a piece of junk. I realize stranger things have happened, but I am eternally optimistic.

Your point regarding the batteries is well taken. I figured at the price I am getting the body for, I could probably afford to grab a couple new batteries and maybe even a battery grip for the 30D.

I'm quite excited! It looks almost brand new, no scratches etc...she bought it when it was new and rarely used it.

For $150 it is hard to go wrong, but you might want to get a shutter count on that camera as they are rated for about 100,000 activations on the older Canon bodies you can get the count by using the software at http://eoscount.com/

I used to to read my 50D and it worked with no problems.... for newer Canon bodies there is other software that does the same but I don't remember the name, but I have also read the count on my 60D using it.

Also you might consider that the sensor may have some dust problems, you can usually find those by shooting a pict of a bright sky using a small aperture and then expanding the pict in a photo viewing software on your laptop. Cleaning the sensor can be done cheaply, you can purchase a cleaning kit online, it is pretty easy to do and you get remarkable results.

I would go for this in a heart beat - I am looking for a 20D or 30D to use as my first DSLR camera - I have a large assortment of lens that came with a Canon F1 kit an older friend gave me - now if I can just "Adopt" one of these canon bodies I'll be set.

I just called and left her a message that I was indeed interested - I am keeping my fingers crossed that she still has it and did not offer it to somebody else while I was trying to decide!

i shoot with a nikon d-100 that is even older then the canon you are looking at, and it serves me well. I say go for it.so what if it doesn't have the newest bells and whistles. Just cause its older and out of date don't mean it isn't usefull any more ( kinda like me!)

To me, it's like buying a old car that's in good shape...it might not have a 5-speed transmission and zone heating & cooling but it will still get you from point A to point B in relitive comfort.

Quick update - she hasn't offered it to anybody else and I will be going to check it out tomorrow evening. :)

Thank you all very much for your input, I will let you know how it turns out!
