Although I live just an hour from Mystic, haven't spent a lot of time there since I got interested in photography. However, there is, plenty to photography there. At mid day when your ready for lunch you may want to travel about 5 miles north on route 1 to The Dog Watch Cafe. One of the owners there Clay has a great collection of his photos on the wall of the restaurant from an African Safari. Dog Watch is located on the water is out of the hustle and bustle of Mystic and will also give you some great opportunity to take photos. If Clay is working that day and not busy he may be able to give you tips that I don't know.

Enjoy

I live about an hour away. I took a trip Sat. to do some photos at Mystic but the traffic was backed up for what seemed like hours, never made it. however, Mystic is beautiful. Lots of photos to shoot there. They have the mystic sea aquarium. $30 adm. And the sea port. There are some falls in New London, Ayers/Baileys falls upper and lower. I have never been though and some light houses. Have fun.

Mystic Seaport is a good photo spot with the old ships and the shops along the main road.
The village of Essex which is on the east side of the CT River just north of I-95 is a nice little town with it's shops and the museum at the end of the road by the river. The drive up Rt 154 from Essex will offer several points of scenic places. There is a ferry in Chester just off Rt 154 that has nice views of the river and cliffs with Gillette's Castle looking down on you, and a good place to see Eagles.
Continuing up Rt 154 turn right on Rt 82 to East Haddam where the old swing bridge is still in operation and another place for Eagles.
If you're looking for an 'on the top of the world' view, in Somers, CT which is at the top of the state has Soapstone Mountain which you can drive up and climb the tower to look down on the world around. Right next to the tower is a NOAA Dopler station if you're interested in that kind of thing.

Let me know if there is anything in particular you're interested in.

Mystic is an interesting place. I lived there for a few years back in mid 80's. Half is governed by Groton and half by Stonington. At least then that was the way, no Mystic PD or FD it was either Stonington or Groton. You can do all the touristy things in Mystic then head up rte 1A about 2-3 miles looking for Stonington Borough. This is a old fishing village and still an active fishing port. the Borough is a little peninsula that juts out into LI sound One way street in, one way street out with lot's of cross streets, former home to Poet James Merrill. Quint little shops and a few good restaurant. Park and walk around

The river that bridge crosses divides the Stonington side of Mystic, with Stonington being to the right of the river as shot, from the Groton Side. That shot is looking into Harbor with LI Sound off to the shooters back. Just past Bridge on the right is Mystic Seaport. Now you are all oriented. :-P

I grew up in CT, near Hartford, and went back periodically to visit parents until her death some ten years ago. Whenever I went, I took a few hours off from visiting just to photograph that very beautiful state.

Too bad the wedding isn't in October, when the blaze of the fall foiage is awe inspiring. None the less, you'll find many photo ops just driving around, perhaps not as spectacular as the majestic mountains in CO, but still very pretty.

If you're into hiking at all, there are many state parks around mountains (hills to you in CO!) with trails leading up to some good views of the surrounding countryside.

Ditto I live in RI and had a sales territory there for 20 of my years on the road. I've spent many days and nights there not only working but enjoying the great city of Newport. So much scenery to catch there, you could easily spend your entire trip there.

Mystic alone is a great day of snapping photos but if you want to span out a bit, I would not leave the state. So much to see.
With all those covered bridges alone, there is no need to go anywhere else. Click on the number to see a picture of the bridge

Did anyone mention Mark Twain's home? It is in Hartford

Oh and the Ancient Burying Ground, Hartford's first public cemetery. You may find graves as old as 1640.

If I think of something else I will post again... been a long time since I ran around there.
