Sony A7RIII freezing issues

I’ve had my A7RIII for about 5 months, and just recently, it’s been occasionally locking up with the back screen and viewfinder still operational, but all buttons and dials non-responsive. Even the on/off switch won’t work, so the only way to turn the camera off is to remove the battery. After doing so, everything seems to work, until the next time it happens. I’ve also noticed a growling sound coming from the camera at times just before it locks up. I’m due for the new firmware update, so I’ll do that today, but I’m not very optimistic that that’ll correct the issue. So, I’m wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience, and if so, how was it resolved? Thanks!

The good news that it's still under warranty.

Yes, thankfully, but I’m guessing it’ll be a repair, not a replacement, which will probably mean being without a camera for several weeks.

You'd better buy that second body pretty soon. : )

The only sound the a7rIII body makes besides shutter noises, is the sensor vibrating when it the 'sensor cleaning mode'. It is about a 3 second event when activated and could be interpreted as a growling sound. After using the cleaning mode, the body must be turned off and then back on for it to function so this again sounds like what you are experiencing. My guess is you are somehow activating the cleaning mode not realizing it although not quite sure how this could happen since it requires you to go into the 'menu', then to 'functions', then to 'cleaning mode'........ The 3rd multifunction button is right next to the 'menu' button and perhaps when trying to press #3, you are hitting the menu button multiple times, eh? The symptoms you describe point in this direction..

Removing a battery of a camera or unplugging an electronic device are the first steps in curing a freezing problem. I first experience the problem and got the solution many years ago with a Minolta Maxxum in Thailand. I called the local Minolta Rep who told me what to do over the phone. i don't know why the power supply needs to be disconnected occasionally to restore function to electronic devices but it works.

I personally have a Sony representative check out the Camera before upgrading Firmware? Email Brian Smith also!
