Lks more direct to me but it is an excellent photo. Backlight is where the light comes from behind the subject you are photographing. Either way I like your photo thanks for sharing
Annette you have gotten us off to an excellent start...thank you
and
A BIG APPLAUD to MG STRAWN for YESTERDAY...Great job
I have a bunch of back lit but the one that comes to mind almost immediately is an old fav...not sure if it is because of the pic or the event since it was our first motorcycle ride out of the USA.
now that i look at number 1 i wonder if it is really back lit or just a sillo...hmmmm maybe an expert can tell me.....
if the light is behind does that always make it backlit?
one from July back lit back of hibiscus

Can't tell for sure, but it looks like the shadows are running at you. Side lit at least.
Not real sure if I'm getting it. Is this maybe???? Maybe not. I thought there was more sunlight behind her.

Yeah, you're right but when I took the pic I wanted to use the reflection off the trees to advantage the red apples....then upon reviewing this morn, I thought I'd post to get some opinions..
You & Smoke, thanx for the replies..........

Day 219 photo challenge is backlight. Backlighting refers to lighting in a photograph that comes from behind an object. Because backlighting requires a subtle manipulation of a scenes light, photographers consider it a more advanced technique to master. When effectively implemented in a scene, however, backlighting can enhance the finer details of an object (such as the tiny hairs on bug) or a scenes more delicate features (such as the dust particles or drops of mist in a given background).
Here are a few examples...
Have fun....

Wow - this sounds interesting - how does one sedate a moth/butterfly?
Yours photographs are outstanding. Love them! Aspire to this level but not quite there - by a long shot! Never mind - practice practice practice...

I missed a whole day of posts because I took a walk with my daughter and collected some bugs to photograph. No bugs were harmed during the creation of these picture and have been released back into the wild. I sedated them to get these shots and they are perfectly fine now in the flower garden.
Wonderful shot so far but the day is exremely young yet. (4:45a.m. here in Colorado)

Love your #1 Nan..and I would say if the light source is from behind is is backlit! Now depending on how you meter it can be full silhouette or you can see detail in the subject. If you use exposure compensation you can bring up detail in subject but might blow out background, can be tricky but very effective! Great job on #1
A few.....more later .....Stuck at home today because a contractor is doing a patio job....just might sneak out later tho, blueberries are calling
Is there a difference between "backlight" and a resulting "silhouette"? Apologies if you have seen these before. Need some new "backlight" Hope to comment later. Appreciate the posts so far.
Seen atop the Cruise ship/International terminal in Portland (ME)

Backlit clouds
It's hot - looking at this cools me off!
Pat go back up because rlaugh says if the light comes from behind it IS backlit
thanks RLAUGH for the kind words.
Here are a few of mine - trip to Venice and one of African Darters. Again not sure if this is more of a silhouette though.
