Just wondering what lens fellow hogs would use to photograph flowers with a full frame Sony a7riii? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I use older legacy micro lenses which are plentiful and cheap. I adapt them using inexpensive adaptors. As long as the lens has an aperture ring they work great on Aperture priority mode. I don't even use autofocus on lenses that have AF when doing micro work. Nikon 50-2.8 and 3.5 micros are great. Minolta MD Rokkors in 50 or 100 mm also really good as are the Olympus OM series. Most of the lenses I have came from thrift stores for $10-$20 with original camera. Ebay is full of them at higher prices. Older lenses from the 50's on were designed to last a lifetime and are jewels even today. Put the Sony on A Mode, adjust the aperture, focus using the C3 button for more accuracy if needed and exposure is done automatically through the actual diaphram opening (stop down metering). My results compare favorably to the most expensive micro lenses available today...and it's fun using legacy glass! Sony cameras are awesome, but lens choices have been limited and expensive compared to other brands.

The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS is a superior macro lens which I have and use routinely. It performs equally to the Nikkor 105 f/2.8 micro which I used to use with my D800.

I used my old Vivitar 70-210mm f3.5 Ser.-1 lens on my Nikon Df for most of my flower photo, this lens is capable of 1/2x close-up shooting, my other flower lens in my Vivitar 100mm f2.8 macro manual focus lens for deeper detail of the flower. Both are manual MF lens. It's better using manual than AF for macro photography, because you can focus where you want to focus.

Maybe a Sigma 105mm f/1.4 Macro, with a Sony E-mount of course.

Unfortunately it's pricey, around $1600.

There are many "right" lens for flower photography. Yes, even 500mm or 600mm--extension tubes help. The Sony 90mm G Macro is a great lens. The Sony 24-105 G is another great lens. I usually use these two lenses for flowers. I you want to get closer, extension tubes are a necessary accessory.

Congratulations on your new toy. Got mine a month or so back. Much fun. Assuming you are interested in flowers in general and not strictly macro, I picked up a very good Minolta 28-135 from Japan for $150. It is a good 'walk around lens' with a macro switch to get you up close.
The Sony adapter and manual focus allow it to do a good job. The 90 macro lens is also a good choice.

It depends on how close/what magnification you are trying for.

Most flower photography requires only close up capability - 1:3 or 1:4 magnification. If you want to fill the frame with a part of a flower, then a true macro that gives you 1:1 magnification will be worth your consideration. There is no need to spend $1600 for an amazing lens that is F1.4, where you are not likely to ever use the lens at that aperture for flowers, unless you want to use the extremely shallow depth of field for artistic impact.

I am not familiar with the Sony line, so I have no specific recommendations, other than you should be able to get a decent 3rd party lens from Tokina, Tamron or Sigma for under $1000. You will not likely need stabilization, so if you find an older lens that doesn't have it, I wouldn't think that is much of a problem at all, and in all likelihood the price of the lens will be lower.

What is a good brand for extension tubes? I prefer metal as opposed to plastic.
