For nikonbug and fergmark. Just a thought on your discussion. I've taken a number of photos where, after editing the color version, I said to myself, "Love it. This is what I'm posting." Then I do the b&w version, compare them, and go with the b&w because it just looks better. Don't know why, it usually just does. But of course sometimes the color version is better. (But not usually.)

Just an addendum. It depends completely on the object(s) of the photograph.

Here's one, from Wikipedia:

"Street photography, also sometimes called candid photography, is photography conducted for art or enquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places."

(found at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_photography)

Has anyone given a definitive description of what is Street Photography. We had a chat at the club the other week and the visiting pro asked us this very question.
He couldn't come up with his own either but quoted an answer given by a school pupil at a previous event held at a different club.

'The ordinary shown in an extra-ordinary way'. Does this sum it up for most practitioners of this branch of photography, and if not - what does?

Which *connotes* what? "Accidental snapshots"?

In my view, photographers who ply the streets seeking an interesting subject, oddities, serendipity, and human encounters define the field of street photography. The human condition provides the dynamic context for this endeavor. The result involves human things of all kinds recorded for posterity.

The general constraints of photography still apply to this venture: Composition and exposure along with the importance of subject.

Like other photographers, the street photographer performs with the intent of a worthy photograph. The snapshot may find its way in here by accident of fortune. As well, the rendition of the mundane may stand out if done well.

As one who does "Street Photography", my comment was directed specifically to the citation provided. When read in its entirety, the Wikipedia(?) snippet is completely inane and meaningless. It does not include your contention.
