Nikon GPS discontinued?

Does anyone know for sure that the Nikon GPS GP-1 compatible with the D3, D4, D800, D810, etc has really been discontinued? B&H lists is as "no longer available" and the Nikon site has it as "archived".

If no longer available has anyone found a similar replacement that just runs off the internal Nikon battery?

Thanks in advance for meaningful responses.

Perhaps a conversation with NIKON is in order?

Yep. The Solmeta units eat batteries, and some of the others are cumbersome. I'll probably have to revert to my iPhone app to geotag. It is a thorn though and Nikon is not making many friends.

If it was selling well they probably would still offer it. My guess is that so many people already reverted to using the cell phone that it was no longer profitable.

It was pretty useless, and Nikon now supports SanpBridge for transferring GPS data. You could look on the Ebays.

Have a look at Di GPS, they produce a product that plugs into your camera (external) and has worked wonderfully for me. Have used about three of their products with any issue. They are based in Hong Kong .

Why is GPS important? I always know where I am.

Actually, Dan, I just got back from a European river cruise and some of the images from along the river are completely lost to me as to exactly where I was.

That makes sense. I've just never thought about it very much.

My first thought. If it isn't selling and making a profit, ditch it!

I lost my Nikon GP-1a on a hike some time ago and finally decided to replace it...until I got the “No longer available” on B&H website. I bought the Precison Design GPS on Amazon for my new Z7 and it works very well and is about the same size as the GP-1a. I use it when on extended photo trips to unfamiliar areas.

I have one I bought used from Adorama about 6 months ago. I use it primarily to geo-tag grave sites for Find A Grave pictures. It can take a couple of minutes to lock and that makes it inconvenient. Other than that the GP-1 is OK. I have heard that the GP-1a is slower. At least it was expensive!

I use the Solmeta on my d7200 and feel the battery draw us acceptable.
