Amazing that something can last over 1000 years and I can't get my coffee maker to last two. I liked reading the info on the castle...nice photo, too. We toured some castles in Germany...very cool! Hard to believe people lived in something like that. Thanks for sharing your photo and the information!

It actually looks pretty modern. Weren't all of these castles part of a defense system?

I would sure hate to be part of the cleaning staff in the castle; your work would never be done.

It was built on an Roman fortification....usually for control of traffic on the rivers. On the Rhine, the castles would out chains across the river and charge a tariff to pass, and yes defense.

Castles, Castles, Castles....Germany & Austria are filled with them, some very magnificent. This is Schönbühel Castle (taken in late September) which stands on the edge of a high, uneven cliff in the Wachau Valley in Austria along the Danube. Known as the "Keeper of the Wachau”, the castle has stood for more than 1000 years. The oldest records in the historical documents that mention Schönbühel, date from 1135. Originally the castle was erected on the property of the Bishop of Passau. The earliest parts of the palace date back 12 centuries. However in the following centuries it has been repeatedly restored and reconstructed. Some of the newer parts were constructed as late as 1821 and as can be seen, being renovated today and is privately owned. Talk about your waterfront property....

I concur with kpmac, but I see your point.
