In light of a recent post about the Budapest shoes memorial I thought I would share some images that I took recently when my wife and I visited the concentration camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Warning, some of the images might be disturbing to some. While I was familiar of what happened here I was taken aback by many of the things I didn't realize. We had a very knowledgeable Polish guide escorting us through the different sites. One of the appalling and horrible things I learned was how the "Killing Machine", responsible for taking the lives of so many people, evolved into a well oiled business venture bent on maximizing profits for the German war machine. From the early stages where bullets were used, to the roving carbon-monoxide converted trucks, to the early inefficient gas-chambers to finally a cost-saving method of burning the bodies efficiently and saving coal. Nothing belonging to the murdered prisoners was spared, even the hair shaved from their heads was bundled in Kg bags and sold for profit. The hair was used for making a burlap textured fabric. I could go on, but I don't think it's really necessary. All of the pictures I took were processed to Black & White because there was nothing colorful about the visit or the experience that will stay with me.

Wonderfully captured and black and white a great choice for these stark reminders of that terrible cruelty.

Thank you for sharing, very humbling. To think men could be capable of doing such a thing. Yes, black and white was the appropriate mood shade.

Ken,

Some people will not believe the facts, no matter how much evidence is available. Some people still believe that the moon landing was a hoax staged on a movie set; that the Clintons are not corrupt; and that Socialism is the best route for our country to take.

Your specific statement demonstrates why such horrific events can occur. You are one of the enablers.

Hatred comes in many guises.

Had a friend before she died she was a survivor of the death camp. Her mother by some means also made it thru the death camp. She married a man who also survived the death camp. Until her death she would never wear a short shelve shirt. She did not want to relive what she went thru or was scared or it just bothered her too much when asked about it.
Her Husband Sherwood was a taxi drive and they owned and operated Airport Taxi and Betty would trim dogs. She also trained students how to cut and trim dogs. Both Betty and Sherwood were wonderful people. God blessed them wonderfully and then when thru hell. Unfortunately they had no children to pass on what they when through.
God blessed these people well.

Thank you for posting as this MUST never be forgotten as we have far too many who deny it even happened. This is especially touching today after the Synagogue shooting yesterday in Pittsburgh. Our country is headed into a Nazi hole and needs to turn around quickly! Your pictures were very touching and sobering!

Jewish women were tattooed with identifying numbers on their forearms. Many of these were sent out of camp to labor for nearby sympathisers. The reason for the long sleeves is to hide the tattoos.

They did leave others to pass the word of their personal experience. They have you and me to tell others.

When appropriate I’ve told the story of the lady I worked with at my first engineering job out of school.
It was in the early sixties and we worked at large tilt top drafting tables. All of them were facing the front of the office space except one that faced toward the rear. It was in the corner of the room. A woman used that desk and I was assigned to follow her work for a while. She was very intent and produced great plan sheets. One day when she was explaining an equation on the plan sheet near the top and reaching to point out various parts of it, I noticed a tattooed number on her forearm usually covered by a sleeve.
Being the new kid on the block I ignored it.
Later one of my other coworkers explained that she had escaped from a German death camp.
Over the months we worked together she quietly and slowly told me about the camp and how she had excaped by hiding in a cattle car leaving the camp.
She was about ten years old and her parents had been gassed. She figured the same would happen to her so she took the chance. The most scary part was as the train pulled out of the camp the guards would shoot through the slatted siding. She lay down on the floor as close as she could get to the side nearest the guards that were doing the shooting because she watched and the bullets at the front of the car were hitting the middle of the floor because they were shooting down from guard towers and their search lights wouldn’t illuminate the area where she lay.
It was of great benefit to my career to have that first job with such a person who was so thankful and so much appreciated her life as it was then.
I could go on and on with her story.
Oh yeah, sitting in that front office space corner gave her a sense of security and comfort.
