You should be getting very sharp photos. What seems to be the problem?

You didn't indicate if it was used or new. I bought mine used and it had front focus issues as well as noisy AF, so I sent it in to Nikon with my D3 body and had them do a clean & calibration--I think it cost about $60 with the shipping. Lens now works great and is tack sharp. Definitely one of the best Nikkor lenses.

One of the best zoom lenses ever made. The only problem I ever experienced was a noisy autofocus which was fixed by a service at Fixation here in the UK. Absolutely sharp lens from wide open to stopped right down.

I have rented one several times and remember struggling with the lens fishing around to focus. It definitely was beautiful on the portraiture side. I can still remember my daughter's freckles looking so sharp and true color, but my work with it on moving subjects (tennis shots) was frustratingly average. I didn't have the skill or time to play with it on manual. That was before I started reading UHH.

Sorry for the double post. The answer to getting frustrated by the computer is not to randomly start punching the tab key. When I rent it again, I will go through the settings and play with aperture and shutter speed in some sort of organized manner to see what I was missing before, sort of like doing scales on the piano -- boring but necessary.

This is my go to lens, the quality is excellent, one of Nikon's best. The only lens that is a step above is the the 12-24mm.

Hi this question is for DaveHam, I have been told that Fixation in the UK are very good, can you expand on that a little for me. Bits and pieces on my D300 need looking at, are they quick/expensive etc. your comments would be appreciated. Thank you - Linda

When I got my 24-70 lens I immediately did a test with the lens to see if it was performing as it should. The camera was a D700. I shot a piece of glass that had a texture evenly dispersed across the surface and it was backlit so the effect could be seen very well. Upon carefully inspecting the images I noticed that there was a wave in the lower section of the image. Wave is the only way that I can describe it, there was something there but I just was not sure. I took the lens back to the store where I bought it, Samys in Los Angeles and 3 salesmen and I looked at the images on a monitor for at least a half an hour trying to decide if there was really something there. We all agreed on the area in question but not one of us could make a definite decision as to the existence of an anomaly in the image. The interesting thing was that all of us pointed to the exact same place where we all saw something but it was so subtle that it was very curious. There was definitely something there but it almost seemed like an illusion. When we started to look at the image I purposely didnt tell any of the people there where the artifact was and they all found the area by themselves and nobody could say definitely what it was and a wave was the only way we could describe it. It was very curious. Anyway, I was offered another copy of the lens and I accepted the offer. I did the same test on the new lens and I could find nothing that indicated the same artifact in any of my test images and I have that lens and use it a lot. It is an incredible lens, the only thing about the lens is that If I do IR shooting there is a hot spot in the center so I have to use that lens wide open in order to do IR photography. I must give credit to the people at Samys for there honesty and cooperation in this matter. One last thing. I found out later on that Nikon issued an announcement regarding the artifact I had found and they said that some of the copies of the lenses did have this problem and they would exchange any copies of the lenses that had this problem. Even tho I dont wear a hat I would gladly take it off to Nikon for there honesty. So thats it, I would suggest to anybody to do a lens check for any lens that you buy.
