In Washington State our sales tax is 9.9% I find that a LARGE part of the cost of anything. B&H sent an email notifying me of their change in policy just hours before it went into effect. Had I known earlier I would have made purchases beating the deadline. Does anyone know if buying from an international source creates the same tax obligation?

You've have the tax obligation all along. You've just been avoiding paying the use tax on out of state purchases and getting away with it.

I agree this will disappear into the general spending pool and fund more nonsense programs. It should scale back the need for other tax's, but that just will not happen, at least not in California.
As a practical note it will drive me to the local camera stores whenever i am in the area. I will order on line when i am not. It's just a convenience thing we have all grown used to with two day shipping to your door.

Well I went to my local camera store yesterday to try and buy a "Hoodman Loupe", told me to order from B&H. When I tried to buy a 600mm lens I got the same reply because they said that it would take about a month to get one in.

I lived in California prior to mandatory payroll deductions for state income tax. There was wholesale neglect among workers to voluntarily file taxes at the end of the year. Am I incorrect in assuming the same is true today with those owing sales/use taxes for out of state purchases?

I bet California is going to be a nightmare for online retailers like B&H.... statewide sales tax is 7.25%, but counties and municipalities add their own sales taxes on top of that so the rates vary up to as high as 9.75%. There are about 200 different localities charging something in addition to the statewide tax. AFAIK, the retailer will need to calculate the tax differently for each, depending upon the shipping or billing address. I wonder if the retailer will then need to remit the different amounts collected to the different agencies. For example: 7.25% to state of Calif., 2% to county of Alameda and .5% to the city of Newark.... one of the locations now charging 9.75%.
I bet California is going to be a nightmare for on... (show quote)

Hmm. I keep forgetting not everybody understands how tax collection works.....

...That’s why Computers were invented....

I filed sales tax returns for many of my clients over the years.

Filled in the form that included all counties and tax entities (bart in san francisco receives its own taxes) then cut a single check to the state. The state then pays the funds to the different entities.

Not that difficult.

These are rather obscure items. The Hoodman Loupe is not nearly so useful in the age of mirrorless cameras with EVFs and optional outboard monitors. So it's a slow seller.

Most local stores can't afford to keep the lens in inventory. The good ones sell for as much as $12,200 new, although some lesser variants are around $1300.

The mega dealers like B&H and Adorama have a serious volume advantage over the little guys. Years ago, they gave us a price advantage. Now that most of the locals have died out, the prices for US warranty goods are near or at list. (They DO bundle a lot of cheap plastic junk with their cameras that you usually don't get from the locals.)

Use tax is a requirement in most states and has been. However, most people avoid payment. On major purchases like cars, the major reason for registration is to collect tax if not done at an in state sale. Our area has access to three states for auto purchases.

In Alabama they avoided the complication of locality taxes by using a flat rate. Unfortunately that has not helped localities since the state keeps the bulk. Don't know where our "representatives" are; once they get to state house they forget who elected them.

They may not have specialized software that includes taxes for out of state sales.
Their registers (computers) may only provide sales, tax collected, totals, etc..
They COULD process all of the taxes due by hand. Especially if their clientele is 99.99% local.

Even small companies have software systems that provide a breakdown. Ever hear of quickbooks?
