Yes, they are in SW Colorado also, I don't do hand holding, but take their photo!
That is a pretty one! I read that they do not mate until they are like 9-10 years old
and then they die!
LA JUNTA, Colo. -- Tarantula mating season is underway in southern Colorado, with thousands of hairy spiders searching for mates so they can reproduce before dying.

The males typically are the most active, searching for the scent of females who are waiting in burrows, experts say. The male blonde tarantulas spend about 10 years reaching sexual maturity. They will mate once and then die-- often at the fangs of the female whose eggs they have fertilized.

The tarantulas usually remain largely out of sight the rest of the year, said Vern Veer, a spider enthusiast whose been coming to watch the annual ritual on a remote country road for nearly 40 years.

"You see them throughout the season but not in the numbers you see in the fall," Veer said as he watched a tarantula make its way across the road.

Veer said the male tarantulas have stopped eating, and are solely focused on finding a mate in the next few days.

Thank you Photolady, they are more active at night
and a full moon can help you spot them moving across
the high desert.

I spotted this tarantula crossing my driveway and got a few

I found that hand holding works best for tarantula's.

Very nice series, howlynn

Excellent take on hand holding" and exceptional captures. However, the subject reminds me of a popular song back in my teenage years. The title was "The Bristol STOMP". ;~)
