I built two HeathKit color TVs. Both were quality products which the builder could service. IIRC Heath when developing a kit would give the beta version to a total novice. If he/she were successful in the assembly, the kit was ready for sale. What a concept!
I knew some folks in Hanover VA who discovered that they had bought a Sears house. They were doing some work on the house and discovered a 2x4 labeled "front window framing"; the 2x4 was NOT in its assigned position. They theorized that the local carpenters decided that they knew better than "them damnyankees"! They called the house "Lochinvar," since like the Scott hero, their house had "come out of the West." There were some houses around Hart County Georgia which my father said looked like Sears houses. Attractive little houses!
