I recently rented the Tamron 150-600 G2 lens. It's a great lens, but after 3 days (the rental period), walking around with it, found it is too heavy for me...my back & neck ached for days. Handheld at 600mm was out of the question as couldn't keep it steady. Monopod didn't work for me either as when I had to shoot BIFs, I had to sort of lift camera + monopod...I am gutted as had set my heart on this lens.
However, I am now looking at the 100-400 which is half the weight. I know it doesn't have the same focal length but it's better than my current 18-300 Nikkor. Reviews are good and have watched YouTube videos but I prefer hands on comments from UHH members who have this lens. My camera is the Nikon D7500. Any opinions/comments much appreciated. Thank you as always..Grace

The 100-400mm is a very good range. Yes, it does not reach the 600mm but if the 600mm is a misery to carry and use as you do then you would quit using it.
I have not used that specific lens, others have. I can say the 100-400mm is a good range and good hand holdability.

Hi Grace, Im not sure about the 100 to 400, but i have a 16 to 300 Tamron lens. I use it excusively and i can walk all day with it on...(Actually it is the only lens i use.) I don't know if you have one, but the BlackRapid shoulder strap is what i use and its the most comfortable strap i have ever had. Look into it.
If you have any questions, PM me.

The Canon 100-400 II is a superb lens, will close focus to about 3 feet. Very sharp and rugged and weather resistant. Canon 1.4x extender works great and will increase your range from 400mm to 560mm.

Regis.... I think the OP is asking about the Tamron 100-400 for a Nikon.

You are so right that I would quit using it. I walked 5 miles per day on 3 consequtive days and even after two days my neck still aches.I found the 100-400 quite cheap at Amazon UK but Tamron UK told me it's grey market, so have to pay the full price from authorised dealers...at least Tamron give a 5 year warranty.

Thanks Rich. I also have the Nikkor 18-300 which is ok...but just would like a bit more reach. Tamron also do I believe an 18-400 lens which I would go for if I didn't have the Nikon one. Grace

Try the 100100-400mm, I believe that you will like it.
My wife likes it and can hand hold it with IS and she is not physically strong.

I'm a big fan of Tamron lenses, but you might want to look at the Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | C as well, which generally gets a higher rating than the Tamron. You might also want to look at the Tamron 18-400mm lens. It does have a couple of quirks, but are easy to get use to. I picked one up for family vacations, but was pleasantly surprised by the performance. Here's a couple of shots from the Houston zoo with a D7200 and Tamron 18-400mm lens, handheld at 400mm (600mm at 35mm equivalent).

I also have the 18-400, it’s a great lens.

I use the Tamron 100-400 f/4.5-6.3 on a D850 and a D500, very pleased with the results, easily handheld. I wouldn't want to have it on a camera around my neck all day but since I've gotten it my sigma 150-600 has gotten a lot less use.
