If you are speaking of your "pop-up" flash, it will fire automatically when raised. Set your "flash exposure compensation" to about - 2/3 of a stop for fill flash and stay in within 6-7 feet of the subject.

If you are using a hot shoe flash, then turn it on and it will fire. Again use FEC and experiment with the settings from 0 to - 1 stop. Here you should be good up to 15 feet, depending on the lighting conditions (sun or shade) and the flash unit.

If you are using a P&S camera, the flash will compensate automatically as fill flash, but get in close (under 6 feet)

Thank you. I discovered during my tripod experiment that I will need a wide angle lens. The 75/300 Tamron will not focus closer than about 6 ft. I can set up a few feet from humingbird feeder. Had some great shots but out of focus.
Still in the never ending learning curve.

lynn, I have some dang good shots with that Tamron lens..get back about 12 feet, set your focus on one spot & sooner or later you will get some good-uns...I really think a fast flash is more important than anything...also have great shots with tamron 18-270. MY percentage of really good shots is pretty small but keep shootin & flashin...

Weddingguy pretty much nailed it but you might also look (horrors :XD: ) at page 135 of your manual.

Don't have your manual??? Download it from:http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/9/0300004019/01/eos60d-im-en.pdf

I have the manual. What puzzled me was that the flash option did not display until I changed the setting from the auto settings & found it. That may sound dumb on my part but surely I'm not the only one to make this mistake. Yes I did read the flash section of the manual but still new to camera. I also watched the video that came with it too.
Why can't flash appear in any auto setting? I would think that you would still benefit in some of the auto settings as well.

Unfortunately . . .fully "auto" means fully auto. There are quite a few selections that are not available in the fully auto mode. If you want just SOME control, but still want automatic, then shutter priority . . . "S" with Nikon, and "TV" with Canon, will give you the choice of shutter speed, and the camera will automatically set the F/stop (aperture) to get proper exposure. Also the same situation is with aperture priority . . . "A" with Nikon and "AV" for Canon, where you choose the F/stop and the camera chooses the shutter speed. Have to be careful of that in subdued light as the camera will choose a shutter speed that is impossible to hand hold without getting camera movement.

Most important . . . keep reading the camera manual and practicing until the manual is worn out. If you are new to that camera that shouldn't take more than a couple of months. Enjoy the challenge!

Thanks all.
With your help I was able to activate flash in manual mode.
I put camera in auto indoors an fired a shot,Flash pops up.
Now I can fill flash. My problem was to get the flash to pop up. I know this sounds stupid but I am reading & learning.
The best & quickest is to have hands on help which I will pursue.(Camera School) With equipment I sell the manual never comes out of the sealed envelope. I am used to phone calls with basic questions like how do I boot it up?

Anyone know what bird this is?
