Questions for Mac users about updates

There have been several posts about the new Mojave update and since I have a Mac Book Pro Retina (mid 2014 model) I have been reading the posts. I was curious when the little icon for updates on the App store icon didn't show any thing. When I opened the app and clicked on updates the message stated that my computer is up to date but is running Sierra not Mojave.

Is this computer now considered too old for updates? I will be disappointed if it is since I have a much older HP that is running Window 10.

I see Mojave listed in the App store, can I download it anyway and will it run correctly on this computer?

Thanks for your help!!

Thank you!!!

I will give them a few more weeks to work out the bugs and then download it from the app store.

Glad to assist - looks like your Mac qualifies. And yes, I always wait awhile also for any obvious bugs in a new release to be sorted out before installing.

Generally, from my experience with a Mac, if you try to install software that is incompatible with your present hardware, the Mac will tell you. I believe that the Apple download center will verify your Mac's architecture, before it initiates the download. If it is not compatible, you will be notified.

BTW: Don't worry if you have to continue using High Sierra.....Mojave is not a whole lot of improvement.

I've never had a problem with a Mac update.

I don't think the Update screen of the App Store icon shows OS updates as "needed" or whatever it is that puts the little red number on the icon - I think it only shows "apps" that have updates available. I'm still on High Sierra and do not see Mojave as an offering on the Update screen at the App Store, although it does show at the top of the main page when I first go to the App Store.

Same philosophy here. I used to upgrade with enthusiasm every time a new upgrade became available and then never used the new features. So I quit after bogging down my 2006 MacBook Pro with Sierra. Now I'm still running Sierra on my 2011 iMac desktop and have no intention of upgrading so long as the software apps work. I have a friend that is still using Snow Leopard on his iMac and it's doing fine.

Yeah, tough luck on you Apple fans. I run Windows 10 on 10-11-year old Dell desktops and laptops, and it performs quite well!

Keep giving Apple your money and they will keep screwing you without even giving you a kiss!

Although I have not tried it Mojave, from the advertisements seems geared more toward the cloud and social media . As a cloud and social media avoider (privacy and security concerns) to change to Mohave from High Sierra would be, for me at least, a downgrade. That said, if you try to install a Mac OS on a machine with which it is not compatible, the install will stop and you will be warned by a dialogue box that the install cannot be done. If you want the new OS give it a try, just be aware that it might be difficult to go back to the OS that you had if you don't like the Mojave flavor of OS.

There have been several posts about the new Mojave... (show quote)

You can open "App Store" and select "Updates" where you'll see all updates available for your machine. However as others have pointed out, if you are happy with your machine as-is, don't; unless you want or need the features in Mojave. I stopped the upgrades at El Capitan, (10.11.6) as a couple of applications I use would not run in any system higher than El Capitan. IOW: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
