Gregory's advise is the best, and I would take him up on his generous offer!

Agree but you may plan ahead and schedule a swamp walk there wit the staff. They are very good. That way you can get his perspective. You will get wet probably up to your thighs.

Used to live minutes from there. Holiday Park is nice for wildlife and airboat tour, alligator wrestling. Rt. 27 has several nice older lodgings with restaurants. Alligator Alley is a nice ride to Naples where you can find a multitude of nice places to stay for a night.

I am planning a trip through the Everglades in mid-January. I have researched travel sites but would like input - especially from local nearby residents. I would like to take US41 but I need to know of places to stay (at a reasonable price). Any help is appreciated. Or should I take I-75. Want the best chance for wildlife but don't want to break the bank. And will need to stay somewhere for one night. Thanks.

No to I-75
Yes to US 41, the original Tamiami Trail.
Follow Gregory's advice, you can't go wrong.

there is a little town called choskoloskee right in the heart of the everglades. very quite and nothing there is fancy but its clean and gets you to great locations to shoot

Only one additional mention for some of the best birding photography anywhere before you get to the Everglades can be found at two places: 1) Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island just next to Fort Myers and Cape Coral (where I've lived for 32 years) and 2) Corkscrew Sanctuary (between Fort Myers and Naples) which is run by the National Audubon Society. Most all of the advice above is excellent and absolutely correct!! The traffic between Naples and Miami on US 41 is not bad at all. Only one traffic light as mentioned. Clyde Butcher Gallery is tops as mentioned.

Only one additional mention for some of the best b... (show quote)
Yes, we are doing most of that, but will be doing that after the Everglades so I can plan specific dates for Gregory.
