Travel Kit Validation

Just completed a six weeks plus trip to Australia and New Zealand. Before the trip I had asked for lens kit recommendations from the group here. The consensus was to travel light.

So, I did just that - My Sigma 17-70 C and my Nikon 70-300 VR. Left all others home.

Everyone here was absolutely correct. Out of 1700+ shots, all but 70 were shot with the Sigma. I only used the 70-300 while visiting an Aussie animal zoo where I wanted the extra reach for close ups of Koalas, etc.

Could have likely been fine with only the Sigma and traveled even lighter.

Thanks to all for the sound advice.

Good to know the advice was helpful.

Zooms just make sense for traveling.

I travel with a M43 kit and Olympus 9-18mm, Lumix 14-45mm, and Lumix 45-200mm lenses, (FF equivalent field of view factor is 2x). The entire M43 kit takes up less space and weighs less than my D750 with 24-70mm f2.8 mounted. By far the 9-18 and 14-45 get the most use.

Tony Northrop did a What's in My Bag video about a recent trip to Morocco. He brought a 24-70 and a 70-200. He used the 70-200 once, and bitched about the weight for the entire trip.

We travel with 22-300 Tamron and it covers most scenes.

Just finished a cruise in Spain. Took 17-40, 24-105 and a 50 mm 1.5. I took out the 50 mm for some interior shots, 99% of the time the 24-105 stayed on my 5D mk iv. Great lens for travel.

The Sigma 17-70 is my standard lens, first lens added to the bag Canon 10-18, Bob.

Actually sort of interesting. I wonder if Olympus' research found that the two lens "requirement" for such coverage was a burden and was the main reason for making their single lens 12-100 f4 coverage (24-200 in 35mm terms, the same range that Tony took).

I’ve had a very similar experience, around 24-70 (35mm equivalent) seems to be the most useful.
Glad you had fun!

Ha. Yep that sounds like Tony. He’s usually up on the latest tech. And the latest tech is less mass and volume and higher IQ.

I found the same thing on a cruise to Norway, Scotland and London in July. I took 3 lenses for my Canon 80D, and used my 18-135 for over 90% of my photos; I used the 10-18 for a few and only had the EF 70-300 (112-480 equivalent on my camera) on once in 2 1/2 weeks. If there had been a bit more time, I would have used the 10-18 a bit more, but not the 70-300.
