Artist,
Pretty good advice here. Other Canon models in the "D" series have top displays that have all the info. You just have to press the shutter half way when the display goes away, but without having your eye glued to the viewfinder you can adjust the aperture, shutter and ISO as well as the shutter functions of one shot or Servo. Then frame the subject and focus through the Viewfinder. But you can and SHOULD pre-set the Aperture or Shutter speed and definitely the ISO for a set of shots in the same light and location.

BUT all is doable with the T6 with fine results. Also I proclaim for you that using Aperture or Shutter Priority automation is a convenience and NOT cheating. Try it. You will do the choosing as if you were in Manual, but the process is convenient and should work for you. Leave the ISO alone. Pick one for the conditions and stay with it.

The real issue here is what's IN FRONT of the camera.

Yes, I understand the Av and Tv are not cheating. I just want to practice getting the hang of everything on manual to get my hand used to smoothly adjusting settings and getting a feeling for settings in different conditions. I love all this advice! Yes, the point is the subject and capturing it!

I'm well aware of that. I started with a T2i with a 9 point but discovered that center point was limiting very early on.

Absolutely. I completely agree. I moved to digital with the same camera when it first came out.

As mentioned the duel axis center point is more accurate and quicker than the other points If you want the specific technical reasons you might want to Google it for a detailed description. Second, using all nine points which focuses on whatever is closest is rarely the best choice. Usually we want the sharpest focus on on a specific subject or specific area of a subject. When using all nine points anything the camera perceives as closer will be in focus and your subject may not be. With your camera that is generally best accomplished using the center point. You might want to research a technique called focus and recompose.

Exactly. With manual focus, we had to do that. The T6 is a good entry level DSLR, but it is relatively old technology - like my T3i - and one needs to learn how to use it. It is perfectly capable of producing excellent results, but lacks the sophistication of more modern cameras such as the 80D or 5DIV. That said, the T6 is excellent for learning how modern auto focus cameras actually work. This is really an exercise in how well you work with the equipment that you have.

Completely agree with you as usual!
