Question for mac users and CC installs

I have a friend with a MAC that is making the transition to (the dreaded rental) CC and I can answer questions for a PC but am calling on your expertise to help allay his fears.

1. Will installing CC wipe out his current LR and PS programs? Or will he be able to continue to use them? (I know... why?)
2. Will the install run smoothly with default settings as he is not computer literate?
3. Will existing plugins/addons remain? (pretty sure I know the answer here... some will, some won't and will need to be reinstalled)

I can council him on updating the old catalogs providing he knows where they are. Many thanks in advance.

1. No, Yes
2. Yes
3. You already know the answer.
I did it on a “late 2012” MacBook Pro. Install worked. Programs work.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll wait for a few more answers before passing on the news. It would be just my luck to have 100 yes you can answers and him run into a no you can't scenario.

The LR software will be installed in parallel to the existing LR software. That is, the old software and old LRCAT file will remain unchanged except for being renamed. When the new LR software is started, it will detected the existing LRCAT and will prompt the user if they want to import all the existing images into the new catalog. This default action should be confirmed / accepted and will run maybe longer in clock-time than the software install completed, depending on the number of images being processed.

Now, for a not very computer literate person, they need to understand the confusing situation that will exist with two versions of LR on their computer. To avoid confusion, they should delete (or otherwise rename) the launch icons the old software. This is done to avoid the confusion and disappointment of mistakenly using the old software instead of the new. Eventually, the old software should be un-installed, but let a month or 6-months pass before this maintenance action.

The PS software should also install "beside" rather than overwriting, but the issue of 'catalog' is not applicable to PS. Others can confirm what the desktop will look like with the PS CC installed to a computer with an existing PS. It likely will have the same situation as LR and LRCC where multiple launch icons each point to different versions of the software. Clean-up this situation before unintended confusion gets started.

Regarding plugins, these may require re-install of the plug-in software, but they need to be evaluated plug-in by plug-in. Before the start of installing any software, your friend should:

1. Assure they have a back-up of their computer.
2. Assure they have an inventory of their plug-in software and the install files (check passwords and license keys, as needed). Download current versions of the install files, as needed.

#3. He many have to manually copy the files to the new install folders, but he will not have to go through a full reinstall of the plugins/addons.

The Adobe CC install does not touch your older LR or PS programs. I still have three old versions of PS and LR on my computer that still work. I never use them, but there there and functional. You have nothing to worry about. However once you get use to LR Classic CC, Photoshop CC, Bridge and Camera Raw you will probably never want to use your older software again. Comparing the $120 a year "rental" for always having up to date software to paying a few hundred dollars ever couple of years for the latest and greatest, I figure I am saving money.

I already have the exact set up as your friend would like and have no issues.
1. I have PS5, PS6 and PS,CC installed on my hard drive and frequently have all three of them open at the same time. It doesn't matter if you go "up" or "down" in your choice of opening a file. I also have two versions of LR although I seldom use either one.

Any file that is opened through CC automatically updates without deleting the original file. I shoot in raw, do the PP in PS, save it as a PS or jpg and leave everything in the same folder. I DO NOT change the photo serial number. By NOT changing the ID number the original raw photo is stored with the processed file right below. If I ever change my mind about the PP I can start from scratch.

As for "rental" costs......I find paying a hundred dollars a year for unlimited use is less expensive than paying $600 or $700 every two years for updates.

Hey....just one person's opinion. Hope it helped without too much confusion.

From having done what he wants to do, I confirm all 3 of your points. BTW, I am very happy with the new Adobe setup. I also am glad I kept old copies of the programs for a while, since one "upgrade" (DreamWeaver) was different enough to slow me down and I needed to move quickly. I have now uninstalled all old (pre-CC) Adobe programs.

Bob, I also have an old version of DreamWeaver I bought years ago when I bought my first iMac and tried to use it to update my website that was designed with a Microsoft program called Front Page. At that time DW was the only software for web design available for the Mac OS. The problem with DW was that at the time, all of the instructional videos and other postings I could find from Adobe or anyone else assumed that your website had been initially designed using DreamWeaver. DW seamed complicated and I could not find anyone with sufficient DW experience to assist me. As a result, I have not been able to update my website since 2010 and DW has sat on my hard drive since then unused. Has Adobe done anything or do you know of any source of information that would allow me to use DR to update my website without completely redesigning it by 100% starting from scratch? I no longer have the time or patients to start over. You can see my website at www.wb6wuw.com.

I googled your problem, and found some answers. If you have all your files for that site on your hard disk, it should be doable. I use Dreamweaver CC, and did a workaround for your site from online. If you "Save As" a page as a Web Source in Safari, it can be clicked and dragged into Dreamweaver. All the photos and links will need to be redone, but the photos are easy to get by using "Save As" as a Web Archive in Safari, then saving the images to the folder with your new website. You'd have to do the save for each page for the graphics/photos, and likely still have to relink the links.

Hope that helps.

I migrated from simple pages made in early Safari. Dreamweaver has always been my least favorite Adobe program, non-intuitive and irritating. You might do better to get a simpler program and updating your site on that, and use the same techniques I mentioned above if you do not have all the files on your hard drive.

CC = Adobe’s Creative Cloud.

Thank you Bob. I will try that when I have some time. I use Chrome instead of Safari as my regular browser, will this work with Chrome or do I have to use Safari? Also, will I need an FTP program to download and upload my HTML files to GoDaddy, the host for my website, like I use to and if so, can you suggest either a free or low cost FTP program for the Mac?

Thank you,

Bart
