Chama Mystery Locomotive

Here is Baldwin 455 of the Rio Grande Southern RR at the Cumbres & Toltec station in Chama, NM. This photo was taken in Sept 2107. I can find little information on this 455. What I did find (at rgsrr.com) stated that 455 was scrapped in 1953. Clearly, there is a 455 still in service, but what's the history behind this one? I can find other photos of 455 at the Chama station in recent times, but nothing about how it got there, and why. It's not listed on the C&TRR locomotive roster. Does anyone have information/history on this engine?

Fred, that was the 463 in drag
The 463 was repainted to pose as the 455 (pre-wreck)for a special charter. Although they were both class K27 engines they had differences, mainly the valves and at the end of its service the 455 had a different cab as the original one was destroyed in a wreck.
Edit; The valving was the same.

Rich,

I had read that 455 masqueraded as 463, but I think your account makes more sense and fits the history of 455 being scrapped in the 50s. I do remember reading the story of the rebuilding of 455 after the runaway accident and how the cab of another unit was used on 455. The history of these locomotives is interesting reading.

Good information, thanks for sharing.
