, I find the original 70-200 f/2.8L "IS" marginally usable with the 1.4X "II".

If you look at the Canon MTF curves this combo is actually very good looking !

I would like another more range while taking migrating birds in the marsh...would an extender to team with a canon 70-200 L be worth the investment?

That would get you to 280mm, which is very short for birding (I see a 400mm as a minimum)!

I have a Canon 100-400 and added that extender. It has been fantastic. I am mainly after birds in New Zealand and some are really small. This has helped me no end. In fact I forget it is on. You do lose at f stop though. This hasn’t bothered me. A worthy investment imho.

Do sports pictures and have a 70-200 f2.8 and very often need a bit more reach. The 1.4x extender was the answer. The quality is excellent...I also have a 2X extender and to be honest the quality is bot as great, I rarely use it....The 1.4x is very worth the investment...

I appreciate all the advice about the extender. Just found out that my son-in-law owns the 1.4 II. He used as a bridge before buying a longer lens. His opinion was that despite the limitations it is OK, but ... I’ll try it out next trip to NJ

Have both and it is worth it. Another person showed some comparison photos using an extender, vs. just a longer lens. I could not see the difference. But, as another person said, be sure it is compatible. The 1.4 Canon extender I have will work only with this particular L series lens (of the several Canon L series lenses that I have). JimR

The OP asked about an extender paired with a 70-200 L. This lens is compatible with all of the Canon extenders.
