The picture was expected to come out great. Cemara Canon sx150 P1 looks very grainy and I can not find why. Any help is appreciated.

BTW: I did not take the first picture but did take P2 earlier with the same camera.

Picture 1 looks way to grainy.
Picture 2 looks good to me.

Could it be just a case of camera shake?

help, please. I attached the xif data so please take a look at it if that helps.

Grainy or what and why?

Maybe you extened the len all the way into the "digital zoom"??

Thanks Racmanaz, that may just be it.
I bought the camera a few months ago for the specific purpose of taking some vacation shots in Cambodia. Did not want to drag my 60D and ballast along. I really liked the little camera and have many shots that are hard to tell the difference between 60D and 18-200 and the SX 40.

Later, a friend needed a camera and I gave it to her planning to buy an SX 40.

She shot picture 1and emailed it to me. Seems like the long reach of the camera is not of much use when going into digital zoom.

Live and learn is the lesson here.
I would like to hear from others if this is a big issue with the sx40. I have some hopes of replacing the 60D with an sx40 but looking at this it makes me wonder.

The first picture has been cropped, depending on the settings, the resolution may have been changed to introduce noise. Check your EXIF data.

ISO is 200. Want to try again?

digital zoom? Effectively, you are cropping a portion of the image. There's no way you won't see more grain.

It's an optical limit with digital zooms. Has very little to do with specific camera models

Please tell us more about optical v/s digital zoom. It appears that the digital zoom portion is useless on this camera. Is it just for advertizing or is there a better purpose?

Digital zoom is stupid! All it is is a cropping of the image. Just a marketing ploy to the uninformed. It is not doing anything you cannot do in virtually any image processing software.

I'm sure you can turn off the digital zoom on the camera so there's no chance of zooming too far.

Digital zoom is always a bad idea. It just takes the image and enlarges it digitally, as Photoshop would, only not as well. Always IGNORE digital zoom specs when deciding on a camera! Please spread the word.
