I am headed to Vegas later this week and looking for suggestions on photo opportunities. Probably going to the Neon Sign Museum, and looking for more ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Vegas offers many opportunities. Neon museum has three types of ‘tours’: Photo (allows tripod and multiple cameras/lenses - no reflectors/models) only offered a few times per week; Standard sign tour (guided tour - you are allowed to take a single camera/lens, no tripods, must stay with the group - some signs are fully restored/operational others are not); ‘Brilliant Experience’ - animated projection on various inop signs emulating their heyday. Standard and ‘Brilliant Experience’ are offered as a combined tour at a discount. Check website for other discounts (e.g. senior, military, NV resident, etc). I have done the combined tour and was able to shoot any of the signs that I cared to, by tailing at the end of our group. I would recommend twilight/night time. Some restored signs are on Fremont Street (East of the Fremont Street Experience - covered light show). Both sides of Fremont Street are good for street photography. Bellagio Fountain show is every 30 minutes on LV Strip. Mirage volcano only ‘erupts’ ~ 3 times a night - check website for times. The Linq observation wheel is a 30 minute ride. Twilight is a pretty time ~ 50% chance timing will allow you to shoot the Bellagio fountains from a decent vantage. Welcome to Las Vegas sign is packed during daylight hours for a different take on street photography. Before/after sunrise is a quieter time without the crowds. Venetian (replica of St Mark’s square and gondola rides) and Ceasar’s forum shops and Fashion Show mall provide an indoor opportunity for street photography.

Abandoned mine/ghost town Nelson, NV is about a 45 minute drive. There are a few old buildings and vehicles that
are good subjects. If you go to Hoover Dam (which I think is worth the trip) take the inside tour. The aquarium at the Mirage Hotel. The glass sculpture in the lobby of the Bellagio Hotel.

As someone mentioned, Neon Museum...It's worth taking the photo tour. Take it later in afternoon as the light is better and the signs get turned on. Some great opportunities. Bring at least a monopod, tripod if you can.

Fremont Street is loaded with the old hotels/motels. I went shortly after sunrise.

Rent a car and drive the desert. The ghost town is worth a stop as well as a drive through Death Valley.

Mostly stayed away from the strip, seems to get more touristy every year.

I've attached a few of the photos I made on our trip last year

Have fun!

We enjoyed The Mob Museum (300 Stewart Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89101) in addition to the other opportunities listed here. And of course there's dinner at “Oscar’s Beef, Booze & Broads Steakhouse” (1 S Main St, Las Vegas, NV 89101-6370). Have fun!

Take a Pink Jeep tour to the Valley of Fire State Park, not only desert beautiful but also fabulous petroglyphs. Our driver/guide was very knowledgeable and showed us where the best glyphs were. Take one of the Hoover Dam/Grand Canyon tours. We did the south(?) rim where the glass sky walk is and the tour included a boat and helicopter. If someone with you uses a walker/cane/wheelchair, it is NOT handicapped friendly — very long walk to where the cars and tour buses are parked. ADA doesn’t apply on reservation land. There are different tours to take, so check them out. I thought the sky walk was meh, but my experience with the handicapped situation may have colored my opinion. I was told that the North Rim was beautiful.

I asked the same question a couplke iof years ago, although I didn't go at that time. Below are the responses I got. In searching, I discovered that a classmate is the manager of one of the big hotels.

Rte 592 W to LV Expwy
Exit 41B, W. Charleston Blvd (Rte 159)
Left on South L V Blvd
It’s on the right, just before Garces Ave.

Take a trip up the Eiffel Tower and you can see and photograph the whole Strip.

As for shows to see I thoroughly enjoyed and laughed until it hurt the Blue Man Group. Also any Cirque du Soleil how will bewilder you. http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/destinations/las-vegas/home.aspx I believe "O" and "Zumanity" sell out most often.

I second "old Vegas", i.e., the north end.

Also consider the top of the Stratosphere. Amazing views in 360 degrees should present some great photo ops day or night.

While at Red Rock Canyon be sure to try out the buffet at the restaurant. It is fantastic. Also when taking pictures of the canyon try not to wear eye glasses that have a polarizer in them it will throw off the real color scheme. Such as transition lens.

Henderson is on the river and has river taxis. Good photo ops. They have lots of classic cars too.
After Henderson, you can continue on to Oatman, AZ. The photo ops here are endless and your wife will be entertained too. Oatman is an old Western town with wooden sidewalks. At some point in the day wild donkeys wander in looking for carrots. Many of the shops in Oatman sell carrots. It is easy to spend an entire day here with a camera. The trip to Oatman is worth some scenic shots too.

I love all the photo ops in Vegas but when I go I find at least one day for a road trip to one of three places.
Death Valley 2- 1/2 hour drive
Zion National Park 2- 1/2 hour drive (FANTASTIC)
Mt. Charleston area 45 minutes north

Check out this wild architecture on their website. I've wanted to photograph this for some time, and I think it would be most interesting during the late afternoon or night time.
