I don't understand why they are so shy when they are in their marsh habitat that they won't let you get closer than 100 yards.
Didn't you read the post yesterday about birds and drones. You have obviously photographed drones.

My guess is they are one's who have not had interaction with people. Cranes on golf courses and near neighborhoods will inevitably come in contact with people, and find easy food. I noticed that cranes out on the wildlife refuge act in the way you describe, as have some I observed along the St. Johns river. Here in my neighborhood (in the country) they act like they expect us to feed them....so I know someone near me does feed them.
