Hi All,
have just started to get my head around using some pp programs and found that I had a copy of LR4
have tried using it and so far get a good idea of all the functions, however, it is not importing the raw files
I use a 5dMkiii and shoot both in raw and jpeg
Any ideas out there?
I do not want to purchase the latest and greatest yet until I see what can be achieved so far
Thanks in advance
Bob

The minimum LR version for a Canon 5D Mark III is 4.1. You will have to either update your version of LR to the appropriate version or download Adobe's free DNG converter from the following link.

The LR versions, and Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, all support the camera RAW versions that existed up until Adobe stopped supporting that product version. This table gives a list of all cameras and the minimum version of the Adobe product needed to process the RAW format.

https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

According to this table, a point release was made as v4.1 and provided support for the 5DIII. Try going to the Help menu inside LR and select an option about Searching for Updates and see if you can force the software to perform an update. Scanning the list, it looks like LR4 made it to LR4.4. Otherwise, you may need to find your license key and visit the Adobe site and find the update. You might need to try a support chat with Adobe on their site and ask them to point to where the software update is located for download. That license key will likely be required.

EDIT

I didn't kick off the download, but standalone versions of 6, 5 and 4 are available for download from their site if you have an sign-on ID. If needed, you just have to register to set one up. The file is listed as 787MB. It just says LR4, not the point release. It should be the final version, if the Help / Update command inside your installed software doesn't find and download the update.

You will just drive yourself nuts struggling with what works or doesn't. Bite the bullet now and appreciate how much more functionality you get plus a service stream of fixes and new function. Penny wise and pound foolish..... :)

I would not have said this the way you did but I agree completely. The new features are well worth the cost. With all the money some people spend on their gear, I cannot believe how they want to cheap out on LR which is clearly the gold standard. If the OP does not want to chuck out a sawbuck every month for the enjoyment of his hobby, then he can find plenty of other free and commercial software out there. He just will not know what he is missing by not using LR. No offense meant.

If the OP can produce a serial number and can update and use software they already own for a camera they already own, that is probably smarter than spending new money to support cameras they don't have ...

It made sense to me to subscribe to the latest versions of PS and LR when I wanted features that my existing versions of the software did NOT support (e.g., support for the Nikon D500, Dehaze, etc). Then I compared the prices of the old "purchase" application upgrades to the annual subscription costs ($120 per year), assumed I'd normally upgrade the apps about every 2 years (total $240), and estimated the difference in cost was minimal or that I might be dollars ahead by subscribing...and I get all the upgrades and new features as soon as they come out rather than having to wait for a year or two until I purchase upgrades. jak
