I have a woman in my office who would like me to print some of my B&W photos of Paris that I PP from color digital RAW. The pictures were taken a few years back with a 16 MP Panasonic 4/3, most on a tripod. Her daughter loves Paris and she wanted something unique for Christmas. As I research printing services, most paper is, of course, for color. I used to print B&W film prints with Ilford B&W paper. A company called Fromex has a dedicated black and white printing service using Ilford Galarie Silver Digital B&W paper, Gloss or Pearl finish, and a Fuji laser printer. Does anyone have experience with this company? Any other suggestions for B&W prints?

I have all of my work printed by The View Camera Store in Scottsdale/Fountain Hills, Az. I work directly with the printer and watch the prints being made. I just printed two for a friend who is going to present them to their friend for Christmas. Certainly, there are other printing houses in business. However, none of them allow me to sit right with them and monitor the process.

I have used Canon Luster and Semi-gloss, as well as Red River glossy metallic. I have been pleased with these three papers. YMMV.

Slightly aside from company suggestions, is info for the connoisseur of fine BW printing home-cooked. Color inkjets can be converted to print multi shades of gray ink. Color tanks are replaced with grays.

Have any of you used the quad converted printers?

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have not replaced a once wonderful defunct Epson printer, more due to time constraints than cost. Using 4 grey/black tone inks sounds fun, but not before Christmas. I live in a beautiful area but no labs are near by to custom print with my input. When I make a cold weather visit to Arizona in March, I might spend some time at the photography printers. I will look into Digital Silver Imaging. Once again thank you all.

The lab I use in Dallas prints on "wet lab paper." The digital images are scanned onto old style color printing paper and developed using the old technology. He claims better shadow detail and longer image life. The images look great! He has ink jet available, but says the wet lab process looks better to pretty much everyone.

I have made digital prints (now a number of years ago) using an Epson Printer. The images were converted to quadtones in Photoshop. My subjects were copies of fine old photographs. Many copies are better than the originals.

I believe that Bay Photo will also print BW prints. Check their web site.
