canon t3i sensor cleaning

I have a canon t3i and should leave the sensor cleaning in the auto mode or not. I read somewhere that someone suggested to put in manual mode. Which is best, thanks.

The sooner dust is shaken off the less likely it will stick with greater tenasity.
Pollen is more problematic as some types are naturally sticky and can get on your sensor when changing lenses outdoors when pollen is in the air.
